Why do drivers slow down when passing Police Cars?

Why, when a police car is in lane one of a motorway doing 67mph, the majority of drivers when they see said police car, slow down to under 65mph and not over-take the police car. Is there a law stating us mortal drivers cannot over-take a police car at the legal speed limit.

It makes me smile as I cruise past the lot of them though, mainly because of the looks on their faces as I drive by. Then usually they begin to follow me......
Once passed a copper on the motorway a few years back. Late at night, empty M60 ring-road and I could see him well ahead. I put the cruise on at 70 and slowly approached; he must have been doing around 50.
At the J23 exit a few minutes later, he pulled me over, blues and twos and started telling me I was speeding. I explained my cruise was on at 70 and that he was driving slowly, only to be told that he could give me a ticket right now if he wanted to. He was on his own, real power-freak saying that at my age, if he gave me points, I wouldn't be able to get my car insured next year etc.

Last time i encountered this situation i was on the motorway with a police car in the middle lane overtaking lorries and the outside lane was completely empty with everyone bunched in the middle and inside lanes.
I decided i wasnt going to be a sheep so proceeded to crawl past everyone at about 72~75mph and moved back into the middle lane once past the police car and another couple of middle laners. Only to then have the police car come speeding up the outside lane along side me and gesture over to me "your speeding, slow down" and then he drove away at 80mph and left at the next exit??
From now on i will be a sheep, its not worth the potential aggro.

That was exactly my thought after reading the OP, fair enough people feel guilty for overtaking a copper but the b
d traffic wombles who can do diddly squat about your speed generate the same overreaction from people which is dam annoying. dave
Saw this the other day, it's quite good that the numpties slow down around the police car, as it allows you blast past them all 
I was in the hospital with a consultant last week, walking along a long corridor, when he slowed down without me noticing, and I unconsciously slowed down too. He commented 'why is it that medical students will NEVER overtake me, just because I'm a consultant?'.
A similar mentality I guess.

I always overtake as long as I'm not pushing it too much.
There was however, one the other day who was behaving like a class A twwat. He was doing 40-45 on a NSL A-road with about 15 cars behind. No one would over take. I was about 10 cars back so thought I'd just sit it out. Then one-by-one the cars in front turned off. At one point about 5 of the cars directly behind the police car turned off at a roundabout. Seeing that the Twwat cop was no longer holding people up, he sped up to about 60 and all but disappeared. I was then behind but someway back, but soon caught up. I soon as I did, he varied his speed between 40 & 65

I overtook a police car at maybe 72-75 ish on the A3 towards hindhead. He sped up, kept with me and pulled me over when I got to hindhead lights. Fair enough really, I did creep past him, get maybe 30 yards infront and speed up a 'little' bit. No points though, just a telling off to keep my speed down.
