Not sure if this has changed since I bought mine (May 07), but my must haves were Dynamic & Media Packs, Running Boards & reversing camera (suprisingly useful). I've also got panamoric sunroof (nice but not a necessity), 20" wheels, Xenons (prob first option on any car I'll buy from now on).

Got a towbar, never used it once

If you're looking at an E70 then either an M Sport or SE with Dynamic Package (looks crap without). SEs need running boards to finish them off too and 20" wheels are about right - smaller don't look great.

Media (SatNav and Bluetooth) and Xenons are important. 7 seats may be a consideration (fairly rare on used cars)? Reversing camera is good but not essential - the sensors are good and if you really need it, the camera can be retrofitted for just under a grand. Agree with the previous poster that whilst not essential, the panoramic roof is a really nice thing to have - we have it in ours and its great - makes the car much brighter inside.

Agree with most of the above....don't think running boards are a necessity to be honest. I didn't order them on mine....20's make a much bigger difference visually but don't help the ride.

The best option is Comfort Seats....you use them every minute you are in the car and they are not only sportier than the sports seats (they have adjustable bolsters) but they are much more comfortable. Best money I spent of the well over £10k of options on my car. Why more people don't spec them is beyond me. Powered bootlid is also good. My car is a 57 reg...the reversing camera is good but it's slow to come on and not much cop at night, they may have improved it.

The 3.0 d is a single turbo diesel engine and perfectly up to the job....the 35d (or SD in earlier cars) is twin sequential turbocharged 3.0 diesel and that much more powerful and I would say smoother. The latter is definitely the one to go for if it's in your budget.

If you are looking at very early 3.0d's avoid cars built before Sep 07 they were pre ED and have slightly worse consumption and in a higher bracket for road tax.

Agree totally - the 30d is fine but the 35d is worth the extra cash if your budget allows.

Media is Essential

7 Seats, Heated Seats are Desirable

Dynamic Pack on SE (though M Sport spec is prefered)

Panoramic Sunroof is nice selling point

Xenons (std on facelifted 2010my)

Aluminium / Black Piano Wood / Dark Bamboo trim inserts (no light ash!)

Powered bootlid, USB socket, rear camera useful

Carbon Black / Sapphire Black / Space Grey / Plainium Grey (SE only) / Deep Sea Blue either Black or Oyster/Black Leather, Upgraded 'exclusive' Leather is nice

The USB port is fantastic - my OHs E70 has it and it's the one thing I wish my E60 had. With the BMW lead (around £40) you can access your playlists etc via iDrive and select tracks etc from the steering wheel. We've just left an old iPod Nano in the car so there isn't any faff connecting our iPhones etc when we get in.

Pop over to www.xdrivers.co.uk as well - the new home of uk x5 drivers there is lots of X5 specific advice there for your pre and post x5 choice

That said when I ordered mine plumped for the 4.0d Msport with most goodies already mentioned, lots of folks say the comfort seats are much better though I stayed with the sport seats in mine - which precludes the upgrade to "exclusive leather" so if you want that upgrade be aware you will be switching seats. Here is the link to my spec
