Insurance for young female on a Primera GT.... need lower!

Hey

Following on from an earlier thread, I'm leaving my university because of the course, and hoping to continue my education elsewhere in Sept. Until then, I'll be needing a runabout, but despite being a female, I'm a petrolhead at heart and WILL NOT settle for a Ka, Corsa, Micra or any other typical choices that put being a girl to shame.

My car budget would be around £800, and ideally nowhere near this for the insurance, but its inevitable. I've fallen in love with a Primera GT, looks in good nick bodywork wise, black, 80k miles, 1998 reg. for £600- not too bad at all. Even if it turned out to be a dog, I think I'd continue the search for a GT.

Only problem being, the cheapest quote I found on Confused was with Admiral/Elephant for £1100, which is ridiculous considering I paid £900 for my 1.8 Focus when I was 18, and I'm 20 now.

Regarding no claims- I'm not sure how that will work. I sold my focus a year ago, I had just recieved a years NCB last june with Elephant. (I got a certificate thing through the post) but since then have had a year without my own policy, but a named driver on my parents/sisters car, with Admiral. Will I still have a years NCB? Might have to ring em up and find out.

Does anybody know of any non-mainstream (eg. independent, or non-confused.com) companies that might offer me a lower insurance quotation? Or any particular tricks other than the usual, add my mum to the policy and keep the est. mileage under 10k ones, garaged at night?

NCB lasts for 2 years IIRC.

Try some smaller brokers - they may be able to help you. Will your parents ever drive the car? If so, add them, they may help the premium.

Keeping the car garaged may not bring the price down. On my car, it was around £100 cheaper to leave it on the street over night compared to garaged with admiral.

get something less racy, and it won't be a Primera, as all the lesser models are doing sterling service in the nation's trash cab fleets.

I doubt you'll find much better than that. It costs me 1k to insure my 200SX at 21 (extensive modification list mind) and around the same for the MR2 that preceded it (19 at the time). £500 to insure my run around Polo though. Buy something st, get a wedge of money under your belt and then go hunting for something more interesting is my advice.

She does say that she she is looking to continue her education....

Having said that, whilst I wouldn't want to drive a Corsa or Micra, a KA is a great early intro for someone looking to enjoy their driving - I had a P plate Purple 1.3 for a while as a hire car - twas a right hoot. Same goes for my little 106. Equally, having seen what can be acheived with an F plate 205 XS at the weekend (see midlands PH 'worcestershire trip to Wales'), I am not sure why the OP feels that a warmed up rep mobile is the best option. Each to their own I suppose.

Excuse me.... firstly, its a 500 quid 13yr old car... cheaper, older and stter than the usual car people my age are usually driving. I've owned 4 cars since I was 17, this happens to be the worst of the bunch by a long way. I've worked both days a weekend since I was 14 years old and whenever was possible during school holidays, breezed my GCSEs and A-Levels, got a diploma in design and illustration, and now unfortunately haven't felt that this particular course is not for me. Which is why I clearly stated I will be continuing university next year. Jesus christ. Was that really a justifiable comment?

Oh and regarding why I was a Primera GT- cheapest insurance I came across for a mildy warm performing car that I like the look of, which is big enough for two mountain bikes in the back and my stuff when moving in and out of uni. Thanks.

I don't really want to go back to the whole, small, tiny engined hatchback thing- I've had a 1.1 206, a 1.2 Corsa, a 1.4 Clio (which was ok, actually) a 1.8 vectra and a 1.8 focus, and I much preferred the latter. Insurance isn't that much more for a bigger engined saloon which is more practical for me. I'd just rather go for a slightly warmer model and the primera seems to fit the bill performance wise.

Have you read the other thread running about the Almera GTI? Chap on that was saying insurance quotes were coming back cheaper than the Primera.

For what your after it does seem a good choice and certainly never warranted the rant it received above.

The Almera GTIs seem to be a bit rarer to find in good condition and hence the prices are higher... with what I'd spend on one of these, I could spend on the insurance really. But won't single them out just yet!

Yes sure they are. I got my renewal quote from them and then asked for the 15% discount. Err.. sorry.. we can't give you that after all was the reply..

Why not get another Focus?
I'm paying £700 fully comp for a 1.8 Zetec with 1 years NCB and one accident. You can pick a (mildly ropey), early) one up for not much more than a grand.
