I've got abit of a dilema and want some advice from the business bods on here. I attended an interview tuesday which went really well, i like the company, they like me and its a perfect job for me. I should know the outcome early next week.
Today i've been for an interview and offered a job on the spot, this job is also good but it's not really as perfect for me. I was phoned on the out the blue and asked to come in for an interview in 3 hours and was offered the job and they want me to start next week the company looks good but i'm uneasy about how fast it moved on and the salary isnt as high as i hoped. I worried that if i take the second job in have lost the job i though was perfect for me. i was going to phone the first job and ask if they had made a decision but worried this would seem too pushy, any advice anyone?

Hold out for the first job if its not just money that isn't so good in the second job. If it’s just the money that’s too low in the second job then either negotiate more knowing that the best alternative to a negotiated agreement is to not get the job. Also - if you have not been give an exact date for the first interview results then phone them as that would be reasonable.
If the second job want you THAT much they offered you the job on the spot, surely they can find the money to convince you to join; do they know you have another application in progress?
I'd also be asking myself why they're so decisive: perhaps they're having trouble hiring (or keeping) people for some reason?

Can you afford to be without a job? If not, accept the one that has been offered, I assume that if you're working now, you'll have a 4 week notice period, during which time you will almost certainly know about the one you really want and can let the other company down with the 'unforunately, my company have offered me a considerably improved package to keep me on board' line - it's a face-saver for you and might knock them into giving you a few quid extra to get you on!!
On a similar note, I do a lot of interviews at work and would definitely not be hacked off with someone phoning up and enquiring how the process was going. I usually find a nice touch if you don't get the job and find out by phoning them is to say 'well, it's a shame I wasn't succesfull, but I'm really glad you filled the role, can I ask you to keep my details on file for future roles?' or something similar. Saves them from some of the inevitable bad feeling they will have for turning down someone (most interviewers don't like this part), might give you an idea of how they really felt about you and sometimes (only sometimes), can tip the scales in your favour if the other person only just won!!

I've had a similar set up twice and I did different things for each one.
Once I said "I've got another job interview tomorrow" and the job offer disappeared.
The second time I said "I'm really interested. I'd like to go away for about 24 hours to consider that offer." That time, the offer was held open and I got the other better job I was holding out for without losing face.
Can't promise it'd always work, but I know I'd always take the second route from now on. Good luck whatever you go for.

If it were me, I'd phone the 1st job and be totally honest...That you're wanted elsewhere but you'd rather hang on as you'd prefer their job. I wouldn't find it pushy at all if it was someone calling me. I might even think that I was risking losing an obviously strong candidate to someone else whilst I dragged my feet.

I did just this on Wednesday,First thing Thursday got a call back asking when I could start

Or even if it is 'local' and you don't plan on moving 100+ miles if you were to leave the job you left for IYSWIM.Round these parts you would be burnt for all but a very few, less respected and dying, firms.
