A friend of mine is visiting Birmingham (from Scotland) in a few weeks - and is looking for a decent-ish hotel fairly centrally.

Not looking for bargain basement, but not wanting to pay top dollar - a gym/health club/pool would be a bonus.

Most of the decent ones I know and have used in the past are all "out of town" places (Forest of Arden for example)

Any suggestions?

You know what, the Hyatt Hotel do infant have reasonably priced rooms. I stay there at times and the views ate fantastic to. Try this link for a price, you may be surprised at the cost. There are also very nice cannal side eating places right next to it. Recommended. http://www.birmingham.regency.hyatt.co.uk/hyatt/ho...

Strongly recommended. Definitely worth chasing a good rate.

City Inn at Brindley Place is pretty good for the money. My current favourite chain at a good price is Novotel.

I stay in hotels at least once a week, so I am getting a: fussy, b: experienced at who is consistently good

See if you can talk the nice people at Hyatt down. We had £80 a night, which is pretty good, especially when you get onto the upper floors via the loyalty scheme, as then you get a free bar from 5.30 till 7 o'clock.

And the loyalty points quickly tick up to a couple of nights in the Hyatt in London.

yes Another vote

Malmaison can also give good rates, as can Hotel du Vin

Depends where he wants to be/why he is there... As they are all in differing parts of the city - no need to be in Hyatt if he needs to be by the Courthouse, or in Hotel du Vin if he wants to be going drinking... wink

More clues needed

It's a she rather than a he! But she will be bringing him indoors with her!

As far as I know, basically a city break stopover for a couple of days before venturing further south. Drinking/sensible nights out definately on the agenda. Suspect near the canal bit (restaurant/bars around there IIRC?) would be sensible.

Malmaison would get my vote.

both were nice enough, good location for the city centre (resturants, bars and nightclubs)

We would stay in either again yes
