E46 318 - blow by from oil filler cap?
Discussion
Morning chaps
I've after a bit of help. I've been to look at a 2000 plate 318 today.
It's advertised as low mileage - 76,000 but when I removed the oil filler cap at tickover, there was quite a bit of blow by, and oil being blown out.
generally for engines, this could be a sign of worn rings, but I just wondered if this is typical from BMW 4 pot engines? or if rings are a particular issue?
A previous car (Toyota) with knackered rings would vent plumes of smoke from the filler cap, but after I'd rebuilt it there was virtually none.
thanks
Ian

well, after reading up on the E46 I can understand now that a bit of blow by is the least of the problems I need to worry about.
I looked at a 323 at 99k miles, which had a really sweet engine with none of the blow by I saw on the other car.
But, the rust on this car was pretty shocking to be honest. Shame really as the E46 fits the bill for what I'm after.
