335d MSport saloon / touring
Discussion
I'm thinking of buying a 335d and was wondering if there's anything in general I should be aware of or should look out for on a test drive.
At the moment I'm weighing up a 56 plate 335d Msport saloon with 50k on the clock, very good spec and colour combo for £20k via a main dealer, does this sound a reasonable price? I only do 5/6k miles PA so the big mileage doesn't bother me that much with this particular example.

Give the 335i a very thorough look over and scrutinise the history and digg as much as possible.
It's isn't exactly rare to hear about the 335i's chewing through HPFR's, injectors, coil packs and even turbo's.
These problem's dont seem to crop up on the 335d as much. But same applies, check history, a problem car is usually in and out of the garage so this should be fairly easy to spot. Check the power delivery is smooth with no flat spots, check the gear change is smooth, check that the car doesn't try to lurch at a standstill with your foot on the brake.
I am probably in a similar position to you. I was actually anticipating around 14k a year but i seem to be getting the train into work more these days so mileage is possibly going to fall to as little as 6 or 7k PA!
Makes me wish i'd bought an m3 or possibly 335i/330i instead of the 335d.

Thanks for the feedback, I'd assumed a diesel would hold it's value a little better over 2-3 years against the equivalent petrol version, hence my original preference over the petrol?
Around town, what would be a reasonable consumption figure to expect for a 335i? I currently average 16mpg in my M5 with my 5 mile commute to and from work... (the bulk of which is at 30mph)

5mile you say? Diesel will not be up to temp when you arrive at the office unless you leave it running a while at home which somewhat defeats the efficiency of the diesel. Christ I'd even go for a 545i or 550i touring m sport.

This type of juorney will kill a Diesel engine, so it wouldn't surprise me if you start to get problems with it after about 12 months.Cars these days are very hardy. If your seriously thinking the BMW will not be able to do that then it's not a quality product in fact it would be below minimum stds.
Flip side as I have already said that distance is petrol only infact it's killing a petrol too all that bore wash always driving choke on not good at all.
May o introduce you to the bus car sharing train cycling or walking
