Car registrations

Hi all. A quick question for a PH collective on the newer style (AN51REG as opposed to A123REG) of registration.

When it was first introduced I'm sure the Powers That Be said that the first number, ie, 5 or 0 was to denote the month number of the tax year. So a 0 would mean a car registered in April and a 5 meant a car registered in September. Similarly, the second number would mean the year of registration. Am I making this up or was that really the case? I ask because the friends I have asked don't seem to remember this being the case and just look at me with blank expressions.

If I am right, I'm guessing this doesn't apply anymore as the '10' and '60' registrations don't really conform.

The system still works. Take the last number - currently 0, the last number of the current year - 2010. Both 0, easy!

10, 60, 11, 61, 12, 62, 13, 63, 14, 64 and so on until 2020. 2020 onward will be 20, 70, 21, 71, 22, 72. I'm sure you can work out the numbering system thereafter

How is the first of March, month "0" of the tax year which runs from 6th April to the 5th April? September is also month 6 of the Tax Year.

The new plates are simple to understand, so why the problem?

02 - 50 will be registered in March 51 - 99 will be in September

Nothing to do with months.

March cars have the year (09,10), September cars add 5 to the first figure (59,60).

Cars registered in March show the year eg 10, cars registered in September have 50 added to the year, eg 60 this year.
