Spare key quandary

Bought a new car today, with my current motor as p/x. I pick up the new one next weekend. It's now occurred to me that last time I looked for my spare keys I didn't have a scooby where they were. In fact, I've effectively moved house twice since I last saw them and on the last occasion of looking for them I gave up after checking all the likely places.

What do people reckon: will the dealer (main dealer) kick up a big stink about the spares being missing? If so, anyone know the approx cost of a spare key for a Boxster? Obviously I'll do my best to find them but could do without turning two houses upside down if it's not going to be too big an issue.

Any ideas gratefully received!

says £140 for a spare key and transponder. Given that's RRP, I suspect an OPC isnt going to be paying that, and the bid/offer spread on an OPC car means they can probably afford it

Thanks. My new car's not a Porsche though so I guess they'd find it more inconvenient than an OPC would

If you've signed a contract for P/X and it doesnt specify the number of keys then simply say to the dealer that you have supplied him will all the keys you have

And you'll be happy if the dealer takes the same approach with the car he's selling you? Be straight with the dealer, they might not care, it might cost you a few quid.

Yeah, well on that basis strip it down to a bare shell with number plates, dump it on the forecourt and flog the parts off.

The has presumeably inspected the car and its condition asked all the relevant questions looked at all the paperwork etc and if the car is still the same then there will be no problem. Its probably going to auction anyway

Well I decided to come clean and told the (Audi) dealer yesterday. They called today and said they'd have to charge me for a new key (citing some obscure insurance reasons??) In fairness, it's my own fault that the key's missing and though it galls me, I can understand why I'm liable to provide the second key or cost of same.

They said they'd come back to me with the cost. In the meantime I called the local OPC (which happens to be about 5 mins from the Audi dealership). The cost of new key?....... £250!!!!!

Safe to say I have turned the house upside down trying to find the bd once more (to no avail)

Quite how the fk Porsche can justify 250 bd quid (£100-odd to cut the key apparently, roughly same again for the electronic bit and half an hour's labour to programme it) I have no idea - daylight robbery IMO.

Hopefully I'll be able to mitigate the cost with Audi on the basis they'll not be paying retail for a new key - nor are they so likely to have the OPC taking them for mugs.

VW quoted £190 inc to provide and code a replacement key for a Lupo ..
When you have to code it (1 hr labour) your cash doesn't go far.

In fairness I've yet to hear from the Audi dealer re: the cost - they may or may not try to sting me for the full retail - but either way, I've already signed up for the new car, paid £1k deposit etc. Will argue the toss if they take the piss but otherwise I think I'm just going to have to take it on the chin

The thing that is making my piss boil at the moment though is: how can it possibly cost £100-odd (for example) to cut the metal bit of the key (presumably the automotive industry has invented a special way of cutting keys that is 20 times more expensive that getting a house key done - I know it's not exactly the same but FFS), same with the transponder: god knows what margin they've got on that, and how it would take an hour to code one up: I bet they sit it next to a laptop, press a couple of buttons and - hey presto!

I realise the car co's aren't charities this does feel like a uniquely unjust form of VBRJ

Brilliant thought. You are absolutely right, next time I chop in a car they will get one with one wheel, no doors and a milk crate where the seat was. fk 'em.
