Currently my favourite classic, and reading the article in Octane this month makes me want one even more.
One day I'll have one, why can't they make cars like this today? Beautiful, unique and so desireable. Want.
I wish something was on TV, it would save me looking at the classifieds....

Quite...I've noted you and I share a similar taste in cars, but I'm not with you on the SM. As much as I am a Francophile, I'm a bit fussy about their cars, less fussy about their cheese/wine/roads/women (not in that order!).

Christ!
If it had Germanian build quality, I could get it. But its French, it doesnt. I don't.
I didnt know SM was Sa Majeste.

SM is on my top five dream cars. In-board timing chain? Brilliant! I think the stress of changing it would shave two years off your heart's life!
I HAVE to own a car with Diravi steering one day (that's power steering, not power assisted steering) but I can't help thinking I'll be 'settling' for a CX! And seeing as I get all my hydropneumatic kicks out of a BX I don't know if that will ever happen either!
That's once all the track cars/sports cars/other projects and lists of things to spend money on are realised and I'm still young enough to be arsed.
I saw that Octane article. I've loved the SM ever since I saw one in the local Citroën garage when I was about 6 or 7. I just couldn't take my eyes off the thing.
I've had a CX so I'm not afraid of Citroëns generally, but I think an SM would need a huge leap of faith, not to mention at least £20k for one worth having nowadays. I remember five years or so ago they were doing well to break the £10k barrier.
Shame Peugeot made them destroy all the spare parts.
Ever seen the 4 door Opera version?

Love SM's. I remember the first time I saw one. I had just got 'into' classics and was at the big show in birmingham, came round a corner and saw this...shape at one of the stands. Absolutley gorgeous. Spent a while talking to the owner about it. French electrics and body with an italian engine though!
Turned out the one I saw was the actual one used in some 1970's TV show (the protectors, or something).
That article in Octane was very good, the photos are wonderful.

IIRC the biggest problem with one of these is its engine, the cam chains are located in the centre of the engine (the drive gear is located in the middle of the crankshaft), tensioners wear out and its a pig of a job to fix. No doubt the abandoned black one needs an engine rebuild - not cheap!
Many years ago....(circa 1973)
Small garage in my village changed franchise from BMW to Citroen. I was invited to launch party, and got chatting with Citroen UK service manager. There was an SM there and I asked him if they really were as unreliable as the trade chatter suggested.
He told me that the average warranty claim per unit was £750.
According to this website: http://safalra.com/other/historical-uk-inflation-p...
£750 in 1973 is £6800 today!

Ah! My unnerstanding is that the engine is merely 'back-to-front' for the FWD application, making the cam chain nestle tightly against the bulkhead.....One of us is prolly correct..
