Other then Subaru, what other older, inexpensive cars are there with 4WD?

Maybe not stuff like the Golf R32 as that is a bit too new and expensive.

I'm thinking cars rather than off roaders / soft roaders.

Obviously nothing too obscure and difficult to find such as the 525iX.

Are there many?

OK thanks!

I'm quite liking the Volvo suggestion, was the 850 made in a 4WD version?

Also quite keen on the idea of the Galant, any particular year and were they all 4WD?

Early Audi TT's, can't go wrong imo.

Although some may argue not true 4wd.

hmm...back in the 80's there was a bit of a craze...so you could get Vauxhall Cavalier 4x4's (GSi, Turbo and cooking versions) and the the Pug 405 Mi16x4. Not sure how popular these cars were new, but I guess they are fairly rare now. The calibra turbo 4x4 is probably the most common today I reckon. The BMW 'x' 4x4 cars (325iX, 525iX) were LHD only IIRC.

You mention Subaru, their entire range was always 4x4, not just the Imprezza. The legacy and even the little justy were too.

same goes for later Jag X type....plenty of those got stuck during the snow with only the rear wheels spinning.

I've just sold one after owning it for 3.5 years - they are good but I'm thinking about someting with more space and load lugging ability rather than a cooking track car smile

Sorry, should have added the reason to my initial brief.

It's a long time since I've seen a Calibra 4x4 smile

A 525iX touring would be grand but I think I'd have trouble finding one today.

I'm thinking maybe a Volvo 850 T-5R; they were 4WD?

To be fair, my TT was brilliant (with new tyres) earlier this year in the snow.

I saw loads of cars stuck which I just breezed past. Had a few people look at me as if i was mad as I headed off down uncleared side roads where they were waiting for a snow plough but I didn't get stuck once.

Very capable indeed with the right tyres fitted but not really what I'm looking for, a 2+2 coupe is too small!

The Legnum VR4 is probably a better bet (import only from Japan). Cheaper, probably in better condition and very quick.

4wd, AYC and a 280bhp twin turbo v6

Jag X type 3.0, looks like they can be had for around 4k for an early one.

What do you need the 4wd for?
The fact you want a car and not something with ground clearance says to me that it's muddy driveways etc, so surely a set of all terrain tyres on a 2wd estate would be just as good?

The "need" for a 4x4 wouldn't have anything to do with the approach of a snow-filled winter, would it? Because a set of winter tyres on even a RWD are better than a 4x4 with standard boots on, ya know.

(And if I have to hear from my FiL - who doesn't live in the UK - one more time that I should get a 4x4 to cope with the occasional snow flake, I'm going to banghead )

Not all are 4WD. The diesels aren't but the 2.5 & 3.0 petrol ones are I believe.

Try telling that to my 330i with winter tyres that still couldn't make it onto the drive! Whereas my forester on crappy normal tyres went everywhere in rural kent with almost no problem. I now have some really good A/T tyres on the forester for this winter and will leave the 330 at home when it snows

Translation: Audi estate with four wheel drive and 250 bhp.

£5,000 for a nice one.
