I know we have a few detailing fans here so I would like to pick your brains. This is the state of my wheels:

There are big clumps of black dust baked on and a finer gold colour sheen in other areas. It probably doesn't look to bad from a distance but it bothers me.
I have tried soap, water and elbow grease. I bought some wheel cleaner which must be pretty nasty stuff as it stained the disks a bluey green colour where it squirted through. Nothing has shifted it. I don't want to attack it with anything abrasive but I'm out of ideas for a non abrasive way to remove it.

Thats baked on brake dust. Depends how bad its got, but if its been like that for a while chances are its bonded to the laquer. If you can't get if off with a clay or paint cleaner like meguires stage 1 then its probably refurb time
Or how about meguires wheel cleaner. Maybe work it in with a brush. Rince off with a strong jet of water. Try clay and finish with a wheel guard like Cemical Guys.

ahhhh dont say that! I better clean my wheels tomorrow then

I've used Wonder Wheels for years on my TVR and had no problems, I also use it on my daily car which I may wash about 4 times a year and the wheels get baked in with brake dust like you've never seen and Wonder Wheels shifts the lot. I wouldn't recommend using it every time you wash your wheels but only when you wash them as normal and find that hasn't shifted everything.
Don't bother with the suggestions of clay, paint cleaner etc. Get yourself a bottle of wonder wheels (and that's coming form someone who's into detailing) and that should shift it.
Your wheels don't appear to be an exotic finish i.e. anodized or polished so you wont have any problems.

another vote for bilberry on regularly cleaned wheels - its smashing
but for the baked on stuff - you know, where its built up over months and months where someone can't be bothered to wash the car, or where the wheels just get sprayed with the hose now and then - it doesn't really do it

Well guys I'm impressed. I didn't buy this before as I thought it looked a bit JML, maybe I shouldnt have been so judgemental.

The best thing was that the dirt practically fell off too. I'll give it another go at the weekend when it's lighter as it was dusky when I tried. I think it wants aother go as the rears were more resistant a stiff brush made a difference too. The guys recomending the other stuff thanks for your reccomendation. I have no doubt it works but simply I couldn't get it in halfords on the way home.
