Morning all

It's my 30th next week, and my younger brother wants to buy me a watch box. Lovely jubbly smile

I don't want him to spend too much money, and so the £200-250+ range is (I think) a bit too much.

He found one on ebay that looks quite nice ( http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am... ) however, the reviews it gets are shocking. A shame.

He also found one here, which gets good reviews though looks very cheap; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...

So, I'm after advice please if anyone else has bought in this sort of price range, and what you thought of it?

I'm after, probably, a dual winder - though I only have one watch at the moment, I can see myself getting something else at some point!

Thanks all smile

Tony

Thanks Adrian - I know Dom (bought my speedmaster from him) but fear his choices will be above the budget I'd hope for!

When I bought my last watch, I spoke to the chap in the store about these and he suggested that they weren't of any benefit unless you were going to leave the watch lying for months at a time. Some may disagree, but the arguments against (extra wear) seem just as good as those for.

I've just gone for a polished wooden box with glass lid - cheaper than a winder, and looks nicer too!

Oh Mr H what are you like!

If you look at the second one (good reviews but looks cheap) then click "View sellers other items" you get this one

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Automatic-Dual-2-Watch-W...

and oh what a suprise it's the same make as the cheap and nasty looking one but looks similar to the one with the bad reviews!

doh!

I have one of these http://www.german-watchwinders.co.uk/Watch-winders... and am very happy with it. Wolfgang Domann is a helpful guy and the beauty of the winder is that it's modular and you can stack them up, one power supply and run up to 12 off it.

for security reasons, I dont leave any watch out of the safe unless it's on my wrist.
To leave a couple of watches in a 'winder' plugged into a socket humming away whilst I was out, at work/whatever would play on my mind. I have had a watch stolen from a Gym locker and I've also lost one in a brawl, I claimed for one and lost the other, its not a nice feeling.

I have read that an automatic/mechanical watch is 'happier' running, than it is lying dormant.
Easy solution, drill a small hole in the rear of your safe just big enough to allow the low voltage connector through and leave the winder humming away in the safe, you don't even need to worry what it looks like as it's not on display.

I really like the look of that! I wanted a duo purely because "what if I get another", but I'm not sure that will be any time soon so something that I can buy another of if the time comes seems a good solution too.

Thanks all for the different options - certainly lots of different types!

$695 with a manufacturing cost of about a tenner, that is taking the micky, The components are about as cheap as you could get, all old through hole parts, single sided boards and really not clever.

If you used Veroboard you could make that from Maplin

Adrian - that's why I haven't got one!

MrTickle - it IS Orac.

But it would match my Gyrodec...

smile now i could do a nice surface mount one, pcb any colour you wanted, but demand would have to be there to justify the layout and micro code.

I bought one of the 2 watch winders similar to the first ebay link and thought it was OK (cushions are very small) until about 1 month of use!!! I had in my Tag carrera & an Ingersoll...............the Tag would just stop after 48 hours no matter what pattern of roatations i used and the ingersoll would lose 5 minutes after a few days. After another month the Ingersoll stopped and actually had to go back to the dealer to get a new movement. Not really sure if it was the box or not but i am not risking it again.

So basically i now just let them run down and stop when i am not wearing them...............it was such a pain getting the box at a reasonable price since we live in Singapore and the shops here only sell boxes in the GBP500 plus range.

I assume the expensive versions are better but for me i will stick to just setting them as a and when i want to wear them.
