Bog-standard Passat does 90mpg and manages 1531 miles on a tank.

Makes you wonder how long these super-eco diesels will last before EGR, DPF and the like all gum up because the drivers never go above 1500rpm.

Surely they must be designed for that kind of life. No-one buys a diesel road car to rev it.

You'd wonder, but there's countless diesels that spend half their life in dealers getting the DPF regenerated because they're being used around town and never get a long enough run to blow the crap out.

Time will tell, I guess.

I was under the impression these systems worked when hot - so short journeys would do damage / shorten life, but these long trips would still be generating heat? That's just what I have heard so more than ahppy to be proven wrong.

No, it did an average of 45mph. I can only assume this includes a few pee stops and toll booths. Probably a speed in the 50s once moving along.

Agreed, for the money you would save in fuel, you'd have to value your time pretty cheaply to make this worthwhile.
