had a prang, vehicle about to be recovered..Steal tax disc?

Someone I know just had a prang, is there anything 'wrong' with taking the tax disc out of the car before its taken away.. Car is a write off.


I had the genious idea a few months back where upon arriving at the yard to recover personal belongings/strip the car from one of my parents cars to take the tax disc as its still worth some decent money... This was while it was off the road and repair estimates/values taken..

Just wonding if you're setting yourself up to fail by taking it at the roadside???

When my BMW was written off recently by an errant coach driver who then had the cheek to blame me for daring to be in the lane he wanted to be in when he changed lanes on a roundabout, the recovery bloke who came to retrieve the car told me to take my disc once he'd loaded the car onto the truck. He said it would save me waiting for his company to post it back to me.

It's not stealing it, it's yours. Just don't take it off while the car is sitting on the road, wait until it's recovered.

Wouldn't take it at the roadside. You should be offered it back in the event of write off anyway.

take it while you can. recovery company charged me £1600 in storage costs then had the cheak to have the disc away - certainly didn't just fall off, and it had about 10 months left, whether they can cash it in or just peeled it off and binned it for a laugh, who knows

Only had one experience of a write off (thank goodness) and was told to leave it as the tax remaining is assessed as part of the value of the wreck.

I've never personally had a car prang, I've always assumed tax would be either valued as part of the car (usually valued at £0 lol) or up for 'grabs'

Insurers usually give skanky payouts which arent reflective of true vehicle value, just a bog standard replacement on the market.

Insurance won't wantr the tax as third parties can no longer cash them in.

Once all is dealt with, take the disc and cash it in.
