When done through your insurance, how many of you have checked your policy to make sure it doesn't affect your NCB?
Mrs Saleen recently took insurnce out with Swiftcover as they were the cheapest for her, the windscreen excess is £65 but if she gets it replaced through the insurance she will not gain another years NCB after 12 months, it also states her NCB will not be reduced because of it. Still took the insurance but I said if the windscreen needs replacing we will get one from a breaker or similar and get it fitted by the local windscreen place.

damn that really sucks. thought I would have a look, and that is exactly the wording...

would there be a way of you saying you were claiming on your insurance as a use of another car (if your insurance allows this). just say your car is getting detailed or something and you have appropriated the mrs car for a bit. not sure if this would work or not

An other example of insurance companies trying to balance the books

Good luck with the breaker option as most modern screens are bonded in and can be a blast to cut out any chips are likely to become cracks if the glass is stressed

I have found in the past when I didn't have windscreen cover that I got a very reasonable price out of a local windscreen place - I had to be very specific that I was looking for a cash price and it wasn't going thro the insurance - £350 initial Insurance price came down to £125 fitted - but it was a while ago.

I have no connection with any windscreen companies

Not the easiest screen in the world to remove intact at a breakers by a long shot. But you should be able to get a reasonable quote from a local company for a new one.

How likely is it to need a screen though? Driving 12 years, 5 of them 65k a year, 30-35k a year since, and I've NEVER needed a windscreen replaced.

Been driving longer than that and it works out about one windscreen every ten to twelve years. Last one cost me £120 for a Punto from an indie supplier/fitter.

You're lucky. The MINI is a magnet for chips/cracks thanks to the very upright nature of the screen - I had 3 new screens in my old "One" over the space of about 6 months, all thanks to folk ignoring "loose chippings" signs.

I average approx 25k per year for work, my last work van had 3 new screens in 5 years of ownership, the 2nd screen went within a week of it being replaced! I guess it is all down to luck tied in with the screen angle perhaps?

I was recently dismayed to discover my trade policy doesn't cover me for windscreen repair or replacement at all, even on my own vehicles. cry

It all comes down to the law of sod. I'd been driving for about 10 years and never had a broken windscreen, although my windscreen at the time was fairly heavily scratched and had a few (non MOT failure) chips in it. It ended up getting broken when a stone flicked up from the car in front so I had it replaced on insurance for a lovely clear, scratch free new one. Within two days that too got broken by a stone. That one was also replaced, and in the seven odd years since I've never had another one broken although I'm now back to a scratched and chipped one! Still not at the MOT failure stage where I could get it replaced on insurance though!

Keep this in mind. The windscreen on my Volvo is designed as part of the crash structure and gives the car strength (just like a good speech).
