Blue/White headlight bulbs, any good?

Recently there has been a spate of early/mid 90's Jap cars in my area with intensely bright blue/white headlights. Which I have to admit looks good.

I can't believe they have all had HID conversions because unless there are some ultra cheap conversions, most would be more costly than the value of the car. I'm guessing they have been along to Halfords and bought some 'off road use only' blue/white replacement bulbs.

So what's the bulb of choice and are they worth it?

HID kits are cheap on ebay - £40+.

Are you looking for genuine improvement in light output or just tartiness? I'd recommmend Philips X-treme (+80) bulbs. Recently won an Autoexpress test iirc and I've found them a decent improvement over stock on my E30. If you like the [-]ricer[/] blue look, I believe they also do a Philips Blue Vision, which has a blue tint.

Blue bulbs actually produce less light than standard ones. Same with HIDs - bluer they are, the less light you get.

Yes, I beleive the ones that output the most light are 4300k. some HID kits are 8000k!

Hmmm. Food for thought.

I actually want to improve the light output on my Cerbera. Cerbs are notorious for crap lighting and since my Cerb is blue.....

However, liking the blue tint is one thing, less light is definitely not where I want to go!

as g3org3y says, the phillips +80 or Osram Nightbreakers are well recommended, make a big difference. Although if your reflectors are poorly designed they may not acheive their full potential.

Its amazing how much difference a polish of the lens can do too
