I have put a deposit down on a car I like with a local dealer. Normally I would have had a HPI check done before doing that but the dealer said that they have checked it with HPI before they take it on and done a better class of check called 'vehicle data' or something like that.

I haven't seen this paper work I have just taken it on trust. The guy said he would get me the check this weekend when I pop down to collect. When I see this paperwork what is there to guarantee it's authenticity? It's just that with photoshop I hardly see it as a work of amazing skill to doctor a simple form and say the car is clear when it is not.

I think for the sake of £20 I may just get one done myself to be sure. I don't know if I'm just being too paranoid or not but programmes like the real hustle get you wondering about what would be a simple transaction like this.

Put your mind at rest - spend the £20..

Agree you shouldn't have to, but at least you'll know for sure. The other thing you can do is ask to see him do the check on his pc.

You always know when a dealer is lieing; his lips are moving.

Do your own check. RAC will insure up to £5k and it's £14.99 and uses Hpi database. If the car has a higher value then you may need more than £5k protection so use Hpi.

I dont trust local dealers after hearing some horror stories from a friend who worked at one!

£20 is nothing if your spending £1000's on a car!

Cheers guys I thought that would be the answer. It's £5200 so worth getting a check I think. The dealer seems straight enough and was a good outfit. It's just I met the guy for an hour for all I know he could just be a good liar I dont see I have any reason to trust him just because he says something is true. If i could corroborate with HPI themselves that would be a different matter.

  • Just did it and all clear. It had a private plate transfered on and off but I already knew that. Everything else is clean.
