Wiper motor

Hi peeps,

Mine died - anyone know if they can be repaired / alternative parts bought for a sensible price? - 300odd is the number I got from my garage for an exchange unit. Ouch. Oh, im assuming motor, gearbox could be knackered too I guess!

300 does seem veeery steep- tried searching too, but search doesn't work at the moment :-)

I would say it depends what's wrong with it. I can't assume it's beyond repair. What's the worst that could happen, take a look at it yourself.

I got a classic Mini one for 50 quid looks just the same but the gearing is different

I knew it was but got it anyway, hoping to be able to get the worm screw gear off the shaft. That wasn’t happening though so I stripped the windings off each & re-wound the ones from the mini on the cerbs armature, there were a few other bits that could be transferred over too, worked perfectly after

If you do it make sure you take careful note of where all the windings go, there’s a lot of them!
If you can get hold of the correct wire for re-winding it, it would be a lot cheaper again, but there were quite a few insulator packing bits that had burned out with the motor that I had with the new one to transfer over. Also I found having two to unwind helped with getting them back in the right place.

The ones that are sold for kit cars are essentially the same as the mini ones, but they tend to come with all the working for the wipers that don't fit the cerb, so may work out costing more than just the mini motor. The kit car ones also have two choices of gear ratios but neither have a long enough movement for the cerb.

I was in the same position last year, after a bit of detective work,trying to save the pennies I found it difficult to obtain the parts. Adrian Venn reconditioned my wiper motor and its been well and truly tested this summer! He turned it round quickly and the cost was less than £200.

Luckyone - how tough of a job is that? Once the wiper motor it out, are you looking at a day to swap windings, more/less? I'm pretty competent, but if it's a REAL PITA maybe I'll try that Adrian Venn guy recommended

Removing the wiper motor assemble isnt a big deal, you'll lose a bit of knuckle but quite doable.

The biggest issue isnt the motor itself There is a small micro switch that governs the stop point. When that goes the motor stops working.

I may even have a spare wiper motor lying around, if i have i'll post pics of where and how it goes together.
