lp640 or superleggera?
Discussion
in a dilemma, what to move on to after a diablo sv, i've driven a regular gallardo egear and liked it a lot, though i really fancy an lp640 for the sense of occasion and speed, i've not experienced a murcie but guess it's not dissimilar to drive compared to my diablo? (but with superior power) does anyone own or drive both? regarding residuals both seem fairly solid at the moment but is a 640 worth another 50k??

nice dilemma to have Andywould imagine Simon George would be a good person to give you a view
Andy, LP640, a Gallardo just doesn't compare.
Anybody can get into a gallardo and go relatively quickly from the off, it was designed to be an alternative to a 911 and 360 from the off, but the Murcielago is and always will be a Lamborghini.
You only have to see one in pieces to know that the Murcielago is a Diablo with all the madness still in, but with the good bits of Audi thre as a bonus.
And like your Diablo, a Murcielago will reward you the more you learn,it is there to be explored and tamed, a Gallardo just isn't.
Good luck with your search Andy,
Warmest regards to you and your family,
Alan.

Granted it wasnt an LP640, but my 05 Murci was a cumbersome old dinosaur compared to the SuperL I replaced it with.
Yes the doors are cool, yes its an attention wh*res car
I lent my Murci to Harry for a weekend, I borrowed his SuperL
3 days later I couldnt stop raving about the SuperL - sold the Murci within a week and had an 08 SuperL in the drive
Harry on the other hand didnt have much to say about the Murci and was too polite to say it was a dog until I had sold it
Depends what you want....attention wh*re drama machine or precision sharp road/track weapon

Moz, the 640 is a fair old upgrade than an 05 Murci tho.... but I agree with the thrust of your comment.
Evo did a write up which included direct comparison with the 640 and SL a couple years back in their Lambo special edition, and think they concluded that the SL was more of a weapon, practially as quick in a straight line, quicker point to point, and was their pick.

Have to agree with Mos. In recent years, I've had a few Lambos including G coupe, LP640, LP560 Spyder and now a 570 SL.
If you want the big sense of occasion, something very special then get a 640. I still miss mine. But beware, its feels heavy, is too wide for B roads IMHO and the e-gear version is very clunky. Great for taking to shows on a Sunday but hard work in any sort of traffic or chasing a mate in a GT3RS on a hoon.
If you a want a car that can be driven very hard on UK roads, nimble with razor sharp handling, get an SL. Unless you're on the autobahn in a straight line, the 640 wouldn't see which way it went (or the 3RS for that matter). I'm obviously biased, but the new SL is particularly epic - all the lightweight sharpness of the original combined with the huge leap forward from the DFI V10 and new e-gear.

carlo, is that you? ex yellow sv, do you have a 640?
craig, as you know my sensible head says gallardo i could use it often unlike my sv, but my with a 640 pulling me will a superleggera give the same thrill (plus the doors open correctly on a murcie).

yes i'm told the std murcie doesn't compare to a 640 as a driving experience, plus i have a track tool already so that's not what i'm after, i do want the sense of occasion but i want to use it regularly too, funnily enough evo wanted my sv for the lambo article but i didn't go at the last minute, weather was crap in wales for the shoot and my car had never been used wet, sad i know but it's like new and was easy to sell on due to it's mint condition, next car definately won't be a garage ornament, i probably need to test both versions.Evo did a write up which included direct comparison with the 640 and SL a couple years back in their Lambo special edition, and think they concluded that the SL was more of a weapon, practially as quick in a straight line, quicker point to point, and was their pick.
carlo pm sent.
Mosi,
I agree about the comments regarding the SL compared to the LP640, the SL is a different animal to the standard Gallardo, but I was responding to Andy as though he was looking at the standard G against the LP640.
Andy, if you open yourself up to the Superleggera, then you are talking about a whole different thing, but knowing you, I still think you would prefer the LP.
Mosi, like your new ride, hope you are well.
Ruttboy.

hi alan, it is the sl i'm cosidering but i probably need to drive both a 640 and sl then i will know what i really want, was hoping to find someone that had both to give me an expert opinion, though i appreciate personal opinions differ.
i did consider a scuderia and a 599 but ferrari just isn't for me, i prefer the darker side

I've never driven either, but I guess it depends on what you want the car for. For me the SL is an awesome car and I would have one, but I'd much rather have a LP640! If you want out and it speed then buy an Ariel Atom or a New 911 Turbo. I've just bought a 997 Turbo and it is just insanely fast, much faster than a 430 or Gallardo. The thing is though it isn't just about speed! I would love a Murci as a weekend toy, it looks insane, goes like stink and is pretty rare. The SL is no doubt a better handling/performing car, but doesn't quite excite me like the Murci does!
You'd be best going and driving both and seeing what you think.

but you still miss the 640, why? i don't think i'll miss my diablo, great car loved it a lot but better things are round the corner.
There's probably a bit of rose coloured specs I'm wearing here - it was my first V12 Lambo after all. Probably a bit like missing a dearly departed relative who was a bit of an awkward t**t whilst alive. If you value something that drives well over something that looks the part, then I rest my case
