Hello,

As per the title does anyone know of the energy conservation group ?

Got a cold call form them this morning offering free electricity for next 25 years PLUS £1000.00 per year tax free, all they want to do is stick some solar panals on my roof.

is this a scam ?

I saw someting on the TV recently about a compay offering similar but did not pay much attention to the advert.

I don't know anything about the specific deal or company in question, but if a company can put a power station on your roof rent-free and claim a load of government grants at the same time, I can see why they might want to offer you that.

They'll make far more out of it than you will.

Seems like every house now has double-glazing, and this is the next wheeze.

Yes they make money out of putting solar panels on your roof and collecting the FiT payments. However SAVE loads of money on your utility bills, PLUS the solar panels add value to your house. You both benefit, what's wrong with that?

If the house is empty during the day due to you being at work, then the saving on your electricity bill will be small.

The panels won't add value whilst still on contract to the company that owns them, and may make the house harder to sell.

I guess it all depends on your individual electricity needs, but lots of people will benefit from it, especially for hot water and heating in the winter

That sounds like bks to me, I would like to see the figures.( I have no doubt that the company that gets the feed in tariff will benefit.)

It's cold in winter because there isn't enough sun.

haha, no need to censor on here, I've seen worse

Solar PV systems are a lot more sophisticated than they used to be and generate energy from solar particles in the air, it doesn't need to be sunny all the time. The only real obstacle would be if you have something that restricts the sun from hitting your panels permanently like trees or high buildings.

In fact I have seen the figures, I have watched a ten panel array change from 2kW to 200W in 30 seconds going from full sun to overcast so I conclude that there a not many sunny particals floating about on a cloudy day.

We have knock an average of 35% (about 120kwh) off our monthly electricity usage since we signed up the the British Gas "Rent A Roof" scheame. We only plan on being there another 5-10 years so it suits us perfectly.

What happens when the purchaser of your property doesn't want to take the contract on? These could narrow your market for resale.

Yes it could, but when faced with two houses, one that will cost you %35 leass anually in electricity, which one do you go for?

potentially bigger savings if you work at home / put the washer on / dishwasher on etc. in the daytime

They do the other option I think too where you pay them lots of money and eventually you get it back with lots of interest and cheap electric too...
Have arranged a visit from them in a week or so but now interested to find out whether there panels are any good. - Kioto, some report say good others slag them off
Trouble is we would need to live here for the next 25 years and who knows what we will be doing then what with job situation etc
