Winter wheel and tyre sets.
Discussion
Just got the Autumn/Winter edition of the BMW Magazine.
Inside was a multi-page leaflet about the winter wheel and tyre set now being offered.
Details were as follows:
1. BMW 1 Series - packages from £660
(V-Spoke style 141)
2. BMW 3 Series - packages from £700
(Star spoke style 158)
3. BMW 5 Series - packages from £1460
(Star spoke style 327)
4. BMW X5 - packages from £1200
(Y spoke style 211)
Has anyone already signed up/paid up to do this?

17" will fit - I am getting a set shod with winter tyres for my 335i.
This is a US website but has a configuration tool that gives you an idea of recommended wheel / tyre sizes:

Not sure those prices are right....if they are I will be ordering a set for my X5. If you read the leaflet properly it says (in the case of the X5) prices from £1200.00 and separately says the wheel illustrated is the style 211. The 211 is a £19" alloy wheel.....I just don't believe that you can buy a set of 19" alloy wheels and tyres for £1200.00 from BMW. I reckon those 211's will be at least double that. If they aren't I will be ordering a set this morning!
So I rang the Customer Service number which the leaflet tells you to ring for details.
Me - Can you give me details of the winter tyre packages for an E70 X5
BMW - The only information we have in on that leaflet, we don't have any specific information
Me - So having rung the number I was given by buy BMW in their leaflet you are not in a position to give me any information ?
BMW - No I am afraid not. Maybe they will give us more information later.
Me - I would have hoped they would have given you that information before sending out the leaflet
BMW - Yes. Maybe the parts department at your local dealer can help.
Me - Do they definitely have the information ?
BMW - I don't know
Quality. Next stop dealer.

...or a mis-print. Maybe we should take it further with BMW GB?!
Otherwise, I'm currently looking at the same options for my E70 X5 and the three choices are:
BMW -- £1840inclusive for set of 177 alloys winter tyre package. Deals are to be done at individual dealers as already have the price down a bit. (costliest option but all new and nicest design IMO)
Specialist -- £set of non OEM alloys £4-500 + tyres £6-700. So all in £1-1200
EBAY and local tyre shop --- £Winning bid + tyres as above + arse ache of collecting and re-shoeing.
Not sure which way to go. As ideally would like a set of OEM BMW alloys but they are far and few between second hand and you cannot guarantee their quality.
Any more feedback from others in the same boat would be appreciated and this is certainly the last time I buy a car with silly wide 21" boots on as swapping over on the work horse on a normal tyre only cost £200quid and can be swapped back in the spring at bugger all cost. Live and learn.

Well the dealers "Head of Aftersales" has rung me back after looking into it. The £1200 option does exist for the X5 but it is for an E53. He said he agreed the leaflet is misleading so he went away and said he'd see if he could do me a deal...he's offered me a bit off (told me what the dealer % mark up was which is smaller than on most parts). I am almost tempted at nearly £2k for a set of the 211's which are 19".
Obviously it saves on wear and tear of my summer tyres and when I come to sell the car I can obviously sell the winter wheels separately. They'll still be worth a few hundred quid I would have thought ? So lets say over three years I do enough miles on them to mean I have to buy one less set of summer tyres (which is minimum £900) and then I can maybe get £500 back for the alloys when I sell the car ? Total cost of having winter tyre for three years £500 ? That's not too bad is it?
Don't really want non OEM.

Last year I bought some 19" OEM M sport alloys off of ebay for 600, I sold the tyres they came with for 240 on ebay and bought some vredestien wintracs new from www.camskill.co.uk for £500. I would 150% recomend buying a spare set of rims and tyres for winter as it makes such a difference. The 20" runflats that my E70 came with are useless in the snow.
I would get your tyres now because as soon as we get a sniff of snow prices will rise and stocks fall.

Looking at other threads that is such good advice as prices are rising now, good old supply and demand! I would get your tyres now because as soon as we get a sniff of snow prices will rise and stocks fall.

As new BMW's are set up for runflats, how does putting non-runflat winter tyres on a 3 series stack up?
Just fine, all Alpinas come with non-runflats. Ride will be much better.I just bought 4 x 205/55/16 Avon IceTouring, with steel wheels, from mytyres.com for £440 delivered!
