USA Wrests Fastest Mower Crown From Britain

Bob Cleveland takes the world lawnmower speed record to the cusp of a ton

Those with reasonable memories or fetishes for lawnmowers may remember Project Runningblade, the grass-clipper whose driver, Don Wales, officially became the world's fastest man on a motor mower in the summer with a run of 87.833mph.

Sadly, the former record holder Bob Cleveland and his team of sneaky Yanks have wrested the mower crown back from those plucky Brits at Runningblade.

Bob took his steed up to a two-way average of 96mph on 25th September at Bonneville salt flats in Utah, not quite breaking the 100mph barrier that Project Runningblade had also been tilting at, but comfortably outstripping the British team's best efforts.

And Bob's reaction to the experience? "The speed scared me so good..."

Looks like we've let the grass grow under our feet.

We should be at the cutting edge of this technology.

Ironic that the UK manufacturer of the standard mower that the Runningblade is based upon has been sold to a US company. Typical of the UK sell off the family silver. We are 6th largest manufacturing country in the world, yet you would not know it from the media and general public.

Where is the obitury for Roy Axe on the BBC website??

I asume that PH will add one. Please do not show the Tagora like the Autocar site, it was a snide attack on him because of its poor sales and termoil within PSA with Talbot. Perhaps show the Simca/Chrysler/Talbot Alpine in addition to his Rover work.

Hayters gonna hate!

You can achieve anything if you've got the right Countax.

I think the next challenge to the title will need a more Westfield approach.

I thought as part of the attempt it had to actually cut some grass.
I somehow doubt there is any grass on the salt flats...

What kind of grass grows in a desert or salt flats? One of the qualifications for the record to stand is the mower has to cut grass before the top speed run. No grass = no record. Sorry septics. hehe

What engine does this mower run? I assume its not a Briggs & Stratton jobbie from Argos?

As a student reading powertrain engineering, I asked my University whether we could build and work upon a record breaking lawn mower. The idea was laughed at, shame really would be really good fun.

It's not a Briggs & Scrap'em - that's salt dust trailing behind, not oil smoke.
