Help with a key please

My mothers car will not start, it turns over but just won't fire. She only has one key for it which seems to have been chewed by a dog and we are thinking it has something to do with the chip inside.

She had the same problem last year, someone at her work took the key apart, doused it in superglue,taped it back up and it worked fine ever since.



This is what we are left with now. I have tried everything I can think of to get it to make a connection, the closest it came to starting was when I wrapped the whole thing in tin foil, but no such joy.

Any ideas out there?

She lives right out in the sticks so nipping to the local dealer is quite a mission.

Would the engine turn over if it was the key that was at fault?

The fact that the engine is turning over suggests the car has recognised the key and disabled the immobiliser.

Not necessarily.

The car will turn over and run for a split second before dying which tends to mean it is the chip in the key not disabling the immobiliser.

Sorry it's a 99 Mitsubishi Charisma. It seems as though it is closer to firing when it is wrapped in tin foil.

Take the key to a locksmith / auto electrician that cuts and programmes keys, see if they can read the chip, if they can’t, then it probably buggered. My guess is that it will be coded into the ECU / Immobiliser and you'll need to have it re coded for a new key
