As title, lucky enough to now have 30 grand to invest and I need some (sensible-ish) ideas.

Will consider sharedealing/trading to property to a very small (eg Ebay) business.

I will have evenings and weekends free.

I like the idea of a buy to let holiday home, somewhere with a growing property market would be nice smile

re trading, just chuck the money away now, to be honest.

Re holiday homes: holiday chalets (fancy static caravans) might be an idea, but I suspect that the recent increase in Staycations in the UK may have made these over valued.

To be brutal, if you have a mortgage then I would just put it there until the time comes that you have the perfect business concept.

It is always better to start with the business idea and then get the money than get the money then try and find an idea.

Open a SIPP and get 100% tax relief on it.
Depending on your earnings. Instant return of up to 40%. Park it in a money market fund or other low risk option if you want safety.

Could be an option!

Wise words.

Property is a safe bet obviously, and the benefit of a holiday home is that you can use it if you have a free slot! As DonkeyApple mentions, if you have any borrowing, simply reduce it..that would be my advice also.

Boring maybe, sensible definitely.

Decent student property in popular student town where property prices are reasonable? £30k as deposit, you'd get a 60-70% LTV.

Needs to be in good condition though for full occupancy these days.

Depends on the return! I suppose I would like to be enjoying some of the return within 10 years...

I know, sensible words, I appreciate that. But was hoping for greater return than what I could save on mortgage.

Yep, I know, dangerous territory here.

I have a friend who consistently makes good money spread betting (whole discussion in itself!) doing this.

Would start small and extremely cautiously, with advice from said friend.

Due a retrace but who knows. If everyone believes they'll go up, they'll go up. Until the panic.

Major changes in the Capital Gains Tax on holiday homes are in the offing so make sure you are aware of this before making any plans in that direction.

Have no idea, was asking you guys. With the VAT going up, will the price of silver go up also?

I'm pretty sure VAT is charged on Gold and Silver sales in the UK so yes, VAT will go up in line with price rises and, of course, when the VAT rate increases in January 2011.

Investment gold is exempt, I thought.

Indeed. Could've put the 30k down on a 120k place last month. After costs and the 3.6% fall on the month, you'd only be ~30% underwater

Well, you'd need a bit more money for this, but what about Property Investment Franchise?

Check out Platinum Property Partners, they have a property franchise that you invest in--pretty much, you invest some money, they use it to purchase by to let houses. It's a passive investment, so they do the searching, securing, refurbishing and managing. You just invest money, approve the properties that they are thinking of adding to your portfolio and sit back while your pockets fill. smile

good luck!
