OH's boss's poor poor form

So my OH got a puncture in the work van (shes a vet nurse) on the way back from transporting from one branch to another. I say puncture, the tyre blew out. She couldn't find the wheel nut wrench so called the RAC. When the RAC got there they said the tyre was in dreadful condition and was very illegal. He also said the brake pads were nakered and literally at the end of there useful life.

My OH informed her boss of this when she eventually got back to work. Her response was that it will be fine, and doesn't need looking at and will get sorted in the MOT in January! But its worse than that, when she overheard another nurse talking about it and saying it needed doing she has gone out of her way to ensure that it doesn't get done. She expects her employee's to drive an unsafe van 30 miles everyday in order to skimp on a few quid sorting tyres and brakes!

What a fkwit. Total and utter gammonslipper.

cant help on the brakes...but im sure you could figure a way to have the sidewalls punctured one day so it gets new tyres

Oh dear, always someone thats has to blame the OP. Fair point, but its the fact it was pointed out and the bosses reaction to it thats the issue.

Refuse to drive would seem to be the right thing to do - however, can they sack her for not doing xxx of her job - just make sure HR know, everything is in writing etc...

HR - small company to this is the boss/owner and everything. I think she has spoken to her direct boss (head nurse) who is going to have strong words tomorrow.

Ok fair point about the bosses reaction, the answer is you (or rather your spouse) refuses to drive it, it is your/her legal obligation.

im sure that if something terrible would happen corporate manslaughter would be an issue. I'd refuse to drive it. And if sacked then wrongful dismissal. Fight your corner, politely at first though.

Everyone agress with the OH, including the head nurse. So it should get sorted soon as there will be an uprisal if it doesn't by the sound of it.

Get the others checked while you're at it.

I'm sure there is an agency somewhere that would have a field day if your employer is trying to force you to drive vehicles that clearly aren't safe.

Just to add, the boss also let the MOT run out and waited 4 months to get renewed. This was last year I believe.

She should refuse.
If you knowingly drive a vehicle in an obviously dangerous condition, it can amount to dangerous driving.
