If he is a trader he should have some responsibility but realistically at this price level it is very much caveat emptor (buyer beware)

What is actually wrong? These little engines are pretty bullet proof although the rear cam seal can leak pissing oil onto one of the waterpipes which then bursts and can cook your engine.

is he allowed to deal from his house? (is there a licence requirement?) Perhaps take it to a trusted mechanic. ET remove mean-spirited pedantry

Sorry to hear , you have to understand 800 quid is what people spend on a set of tires , so maybe it's worth fixing . You will know it will last you another 5 years

A known problem on a 20 year old

There is a possible fix

http://www.miata.net/garage/hsue/LoctiteCrank1.htm...

Or get in touch with a specialist such as Phil @ performance 5

http://www.performance5.com/

If the body of the car is good it would be worth fixing.

I've been told of the fix, but I keep hearing mixed things, some people say it lasts forever, others say it's not a reliable fix.

The palces I went to have said they won't do the loctite fix, and the places that will are too far from me.

Unless anyone knows somewhere in essex/Herts etc
Dandycars? (No idea how they are viewed by the PH massive but they sell loads, innit?) Ilford.

I think I would try the fix before forking out a grand on car of the same value
