Negative comments from non-petrolheads

Hi PH'ers,
Not sure what the point of this thread is, maybe a rant, maybe to see if anyone else has the same experiences...
I buy cars based on their merits rather than image, and have taken the negative comments on the chin from ignorant non-petrolheads. Fabia vRS - a few chuckles, OMG's, grandad jokes. MX5 - the usual hairdresser / gay hilarities.
But the absolute worst is the Suburu. I was expecting a certain level of abuse, and I admit I don't like the gold wheels and wing, but it is constant. They all think I've spent £25k on the thing, when truth be told it is one of the cheapest in the car park next to brand new Toyota Yaris' and Polos.
The cause of this thread came yesterday, when in a meeting the company director told me in front of my colleagues "People that drive cars with gold wheels and large spoilers obviously want the whole world to know they are a c**t".
Anyone else experienced similar? (not just Impreza drivers...)

I guess this fits in with the 'stupid things people say...' thread, but I often get the gay / hairdresser thing for my car, but only from friends as a wind up.
Most people who have approached me about my car consider it to be either worth a lot more than it is (as it isn't worth a great deal anymore) or that it will be really quick (it isn't).
By the way, I wouldn't stand for one of my superiors talking to me that way, but then I don't know what circumstances you are in - or whether you are, in fact, a c*nt

Most of my cars have met derision in one form or another.
Y'see, I like older cars, like the ones that were current in my formative years, ('80's/'90's mainly), and many people can't understand why I don't buy a 'nice new' car. It's not like I can't afford it.
I think the most prolific one was the MKIII Supra I had years ago. My then girlfriend wouldn't go in it because it was too old. But then I wouldn't go in her povo' spec' Clio 'cos it was too st! Interesting relationship that, we didn't go very far.
Anyway, the most memorable comment I've had thrown at me was the time I was driving my '80 Pontiac Trans Am Turbo Indianapolis 500 pace car special edition, (possibly the most tacky thing I've ever seen on four wheels), through town and was heckled by a somewhat drunken tart standing in the middle of the road who shouted "Your car's ste by the way!"
Oh how I revelled in the elloquence!
I then left her in two cockerell tails of vapourised rubber!

I would be lying if I said no, but the pleasure gained from the car has always outshone the negativity. This hasn't changed (the Scoob is a blast) its just I am a little taken aback at how personal some of the comments are. king livid.Sadly Scoobies do attract the wrong sort of attention. Mine was grey, had silver wheels, the little spoiler and a towbar and still got it. Even though I went out of my way to get the visually most subtle version I could. Still loved it for the time I had it. Perception of value is a strange thing, the Scooby was by far the cheapest new car I ever bought at £16k. People called me a flash bd when I got the Elise. Yet it cost me £18k when I bought it, about the price of a decent diesel Mondeo. It was wierd.

king livid.Your boss was completely wrong in what he said - you have every right to drive whatever car you like and the Impreza is a brilliant performance car.
But there is a stigma attached to the Impreza and something 'puffer jacket, baseball cap and 16-year-old girlfriend' about a lot of the motorists I see in these cars. I'm not, for one instance, saying this is you but I do often see people driving these cars in the car park of Hollywood Bowl, showing them off against 17yo lads in Fiat Puntos.
However, I do hope you told your boss what you thought of his comments!

I drive (what appears to most people to be) a gold Grandad-spec Mercedes. Ok, the micky-taking tends to be good natured rather than anything else but I don't think I've ever had a positive comment from a non-petrolhead.
Then you get the pseudo-petrolheads who inform me that you should never buy a Mercedes with a manual box... Grr!
