Hi guys,
since speakin last the laptop and the main PC have been working fine with the BT voyager wireless ADSL modem router.
But, the last couple of days the icon on the lap top has been showing very low signal strength on connection not available. It has been very difficult to get web site pages up. This morning signal strength is excellent and system seems to be vback to normal. My question is what determines the strength, I checked with BT and they said the incoming line was in order. Your comments please.
Thanks,
G.

That sounds like wireless signal strength..

What sort of distance is there between laptop and "base station"?

Hmmm. I use a BT Voyager 2000 Wireless at home with my Centrino laptop, and also have access to WiFi at university. The signal strength does vary, but I put it down more to the laptop than the Voyager. I do get spells where the signal strength appears weak or non-existent. Usually, if I reboot, it goes away. All a bit mysetrious really, but not uncommon in my experience.

There are other things which use the same spectrum as 802.11b, for example video senders, and emissions from microwave ovens. Experimenting with the channel in use can help avoid interference.

Distance is about 18 yards between lap top and main PC.
Without sounding naive, how do you change the channel?

Normally the router or access point has an admin web page where you can select the channel. You say you are using a BT Voyager, which might be the same as this one:

www.adslguide.org.uk/hardware/reviews/2003/q3/bt-2000.asp

If you look at the section "Wireless Configuration" it shows how to change the channel. When you change the channel, after a few seconds the other connected devices should automatically retune to the new channel.
