Tesco 99RON in a 2-stroke?

One of my work colleagues bought petrol for his 2-stroke chainsaw at the weekend. As he drives a diesel car he didn't really clock that it was Tesco Super unleaded he bought.
He added the two-stroke oil to the can in the correct proportions and filled up the chainsaw. But when he started it, it ran very roughly and only for about 20 seconds before cutting out. The same happened every time he started it.
Eventually he drained the fuel tank and filled it up with some old petrol/oil mix he'd had in the garage for about a year. The chainsaw started, poured out lots of white smoke, then ran perfectly.
I am aware that Tesco 99 has 5% additive (ethanol?). Could it be that this makes it unsuitable for 2-strokes?
And it was petrol he bought - not diesel!
