Looks like a terrible great idea.
I wish I'd thought of it first.

Well, yes. But ignoring for one second that it relies on the attitude that's caused the world's finances to fall apart, it's a good plan, right?

Agreed that the marmalade thing sounds a rip off. Look up cars in insurance group 1. They won't be fast but you will have cheaper quotes. Secondly add your parents as additional drivers but make sure you are down as the main driver. Add higher excesses and even consider of you are buying a lower value car looking at third party insurance.

Good luck!

Why are the ins and outs of owning and running a car, things like insurance, tax and MOTs not explained to youngsters as part of learning to drive? It would be more use than the stupid hazard perception tests.

We all know it will cost an arm and a leg for a 17 year old to insure a car - why are they always so surprised?

To be fair, it has increased incredibly in a very short period of time. Just 4 years ago I paid £800 for a years insurance, and that was with everything done properly, main driver etc.

OP, what cars have you been looking at insuring?

I know insurance is steep at 17 but you should be getting quotes nearer half that price!

and as said, make yourself the main driver and add parents as named drivers.

Are you using a comparison website for quotes?
