E36 3.0 m3 - A relatively sound investment?

so, i've been looking at 328's recently. either chavved, rusting, other side of the country etc.
then i realised how little pre evo m3's were going for. is there a reason for this?!
i'm likely to do maybe 8k miles a year, so fuel and insurance isn't ^much of^ an issue, it's just all the scaremongering leads me to believe parts/servicing could be crippling
is this the case? or is it more so the later evo ones?! and are the 3.0's more bomb proof, or do 3.0 owners try to console themselves by playing up the issues that the later 3.2's have?!

well, it's a good point. i'm still looking at 328's, wasn't tarring them all just saying there seems to be a higher proportion that have fallen into the wrong hands than m3's seem to have done.
just don't want to fall into the trap of buying without my eyes being fully open and not being able to stomach the costs...

well i have different budgets for the two, for a 328 i wouldn't want to pay more than £3k, and when i say chavved, maybe i mean more drug dealer/gangsta - there seem to be less stock standard ones about. for an m3 i would think between £4-6k would be my budget. don't mind the initial cost really, but if i were spending my upper limit of m3 budget i couldn't be stomaching four figure bills every few months!

Once you've seen the car you'll probably get a feel about how well its been looked after and if its been redlined from cold and driven to the shops using the side windows.
Gulp, quick mental math on my 328i:
Bought £1678 32 months, 10k miles ago.
Spent £800 in parts and servicing in that time... Has gone through 2 MOT's with no probs though.

I've spent that on the 318!All depends how you look after a car sure buying at the £2-6 k mark your not going to have a prestine car and clearly would skimp on certain areas of replacement parts.
Ie I'm assuming car that age your wiper motor will be well past it's best , hubs on their way out bushes shot dampers way past their best springs lost stiffness/saggy cat con converter well past it's best drivers seat saggy door and boot seals past their best. Etc. Engine gaskets needing replacement, lower compression needing a de coke worn gearbox etc. So knowing that you would clearly not replace them whereas on a more expensive car you would as those parts represent a far lower % of it's Market value whereas some of these are more than the car is worth.
£800 over 2 years is a bargain tbh, i have spent more than that in the last 6 months (new altenator,battery,waterpump, belt and tensoner, front wishbone bushs,rear bushs,bonnetcatch and a few other bits and bobs) and thats only on a 6 year old sportka. oh i do expect to be splashing out more soon cause im a overfussy sod really.

I would say great value, not necessary investment. I don't believe there is much difference in running costs between the 328 and the M3.
There are routine servicing jobs that exist for a M3 that do not for a 328, valve clearences being just one throttle balance being another.dylan0451 said:

I bought my 328 Sport nearly a year ago for £4k - though with 1 owner, 50k miles on the clock and totally standard, I was happy 
The gorgeous BBS rims are in poor condition though, so that's a job for next year. I think the 328 Sport is going to become very sought after, like a Corrado and Mk2 16v Golf, as so few good ones are about that haven't got mega mileage.
