Hi again, recently posted a query i had with my 1999 E39 M5. Basically every now and again the ABS and DSC lights were illuminating on the dash, then a couple of weeks ago it did it again plus the speedo didn't work. After stopping and restarting the car i had the speedo back working but the abs/dsc lights were still there and now since then have remained on the whole time. Today i took the car to a friend of mines workshop who has a diagnostic computer. He plugged it into the car and it came up with fault codes 31 and 04. The diagnostic tool is generic and is made by Snap-On if this makes any difference?!... The codes were for rear right wheel speed sensor and rear right wheel speed sensor circuit fault. He said he could supply and fit the sensor for about £160. Just want to know really is this a DIY fix and relatively cheap or is it something i'm best leaving for him to do...Also does anyone know of a parts place that could supply this cheaply?

Thanks in advance!
Andy

Firstly I'd find out which part you definately need as I think there are two, get onto the M5 board if your stuck. For something as simple as a wheel speed sensor, I'd definately DIY it first to see if I could save myself the cost of Labour. You may have to reset the fault code though.
Sensor can be bought here;

Personally I'd have a look at it myself, check it's not something simple like crap on the sensor, get the part number off it, google it, and buy a new one. Job done.

It also might be worth noting I had a similar issue recently with low brake fluid, the light was always coming on for about two weeks and i couldn't figure out what it was, then one day i got a low brake fluid warning, topped it up and it's been ok ever since. Not saying it's anything related to this, but it's a 2 minute job to check.

Cheers for the response, I take it the abs sensor doubles as the speed sensor for each wheel then?... and that's why the traction control doesn't work as it works off the abs?!... Will check M5 Board but I had already had a quick look earlier and most of the posts referred to the front sensors rather than rear. Basically I'm looking for a step by step guide on what I'm looking for once the wheel is off on the back if I'm honest. Will definitely go check the brake fluid level as this would be a god send!! However would this throw up a speed sensor error code?
