Place your bets. My money is on a wrap, just can't see anyone ACTUALLY gold plating a car like that.

The caption writer clearly thinks it's plated:

"The excesses of the Russian billionaires know no bounds: this is a gold-plated Audi R8 photographed on the streets of Moscow. An invaluable supercar, but parked in the street with no respect, like an old Panda ..."

I actually quite like that boxedin goes well against the black and the shape of the car.

Id say it is a wrap.

My evidence for this is that if it were possible to gold plate a car "Gulzar" would have done it by now.

It does look like a wrap, but then sometimes a wrap can look as good as a paint job (or vice versa!)

I'd say Gold is just too weak to use. Even in it's 10k form, it still is pretty weak when sticking it to something that can easily reach 150mph.

Yeah, and to be fair the colour looks 18k if anything, so even weaker.

Hmm, isn't colour largely dependable on the alloy they use? 18k with 6 parts nickel looks very pale, with copper it will look a little red...

Generally, you can get a rough indication of what karat gold is based on the colour.

Can anyone put this to bed? I'm still leaning towards it being a fake, no real gold here, move along please.

Sorry that's not really true. The use 14k gold solid in piercing jewelry and despite being only 1.6mm in diameter in the case of bars, and 3-4mm in the case of balls, it's damn hard-wearing. I've hit 4mm balls with a lump-hammer before without them deforming. Just cos, well, I wondered if they would.
