After driving virtually every car in this price bracket I've decided an e92 M3 is going to be joining the BigE household soon!

I'm not going to buy until the New Year as I'm moving a lot nearer work in Jan so will just run the 325i for the winter commute.

I'll be looking for a low(ish) mileage with DCT at around £40k so I'm pretty confident I'll be able to pick a good example but is there anything specific I need to look out for?

I've spoken to a few BMW specialists and done a bit of homework on M3 forums and so far the e92's seem bullit proof. OK there are always going to be a few things go wrong with a few cars but there doesn't seem to really be any specific issues at all.

I know to ensure the run in service is done on time, anything else?

I bought one recently, the only known issues seemed to be with the DCT gearbox software - just make sure it has the latest version and you should be fine, mine is.

Oh and the fuel economy is as st as everyone says, no matter how you drive it rolleyes

Give it a break, it is a 4lt V8 after all. Cant expect 40mpg from that.

E92 are a great car. Love mine, and would say one of the best cars I have owned.
Only downside I cant think of is lack of exhaust note unless you are wringing its kneck. Gotta stick a sports exhaust on it to complete the picture.

I can't complain, seems very reliable to me.

You will spend a lot of time in petrol stations, but as said it's a big 4.0lt V8 and if you push it it will go to 8400rpm

Software upgrades are common with most types of automated clutch system so nothing unusual there, although I have a manual.

Happy motoring

I have had no problems in first 20,000 miles - has to be the best alround car I have owned - provided that you don't need too much space.

Only minor gripe is the fuel economy and touring range. But I came from a 535d and its nowhere near as bad as my friend's E60 M5.

Thanks guys, not expecting many mpg!

Really tempted to get one sooner but will wait until the new year, probably.

I've got a couple of m3 days booked at brands over the next couple of months which should give me some tips on how to get the most out of the car and tide me over until I buy my own.

Will probably get a sports exhaust, any recommendations? Want something that isn't to intrusive regular day to day driving but really comes alive when I pit my foot down.

I know the engine is lacking in my current 325i coupe but I do like the feel/balance, the m3's I've driven have a similar kind feel but take it to a whole new level, and that engine...wow!

BMW have just released their own M Performance Exhaust as part of their OEM aftermarket range. Shown on the frozen black car at the Paris motor show. Keeps your warranty intact!

Sound clip here smile

Sounds good - which relative do I have to sell to get one of them?

Good question! I've got a new M3 Coupe due very soon and am trying to sort out a few dealer fit performance parts. I phoned them today to see what the £££ was on the exhaust but its not on their system yet so still waiting.

FYI, the part no for E92/E93 cars is 18 30 2 184 201.

I had a short drive of one a few months back. In fact I started a thread about it.
My memory of it was how great it sounded. My old xjr is a bit quiet but the m3 did sound amazing, one with a sports exhaust must be unreal

I had a Remus race fitted a few months ago. I've come from tuned 911 turbo and tvrs so the m3 was a bit quiet.
The Remus is awesome proper v8 rumble but is loud all the time.
The Remus sport is less loud and the eisenmann is worth a look.
Get the car bought you wont regret it unless we have snow like last year.

Eh? Who was complaining or expecting 40 mpg rolleyes
The mpg is a bad as everyone who runs one says it is, so any potential owner needs to accept that (as I did) before buying.

With regards to fuel economy, what figures do owners get in the real world?

Looking at this months EVO, they have a buying guide for the E92 M3 in which they state the fuel economy is better than the E46 M3. I remember when the E92 M3 first surfaced, journalist reviews slated the fuel consumption.

Is there much difference in MPG between the E92/E46? I'm particularly interested as I own an E46 M3 and might upgrade one day rotate

Average about 20 mpg, steady motorway runs 23-24 mpg.

Dont mind the poor economy, it's the small 63 litre tank and less than 300 mile range that gets on my tits.

I'm getting 17.5mpg.
Then again my 911 turbo was only getting 13mpg

My old e46 m3 was getting somewhere in the 20's

Tvr t350 was around 20mpg

M3 is worse than my Griff and T350 were - a weight issue I guess?

So its very similar mpg to an E60 M5?! How can this be, the M5 has another 100bhp, two more cylinders and weighs a lot more?!

For what its worth, according to the on board computer, my E46 M3 has averaged 23mpg over around 7,000 miles.

MPG?? I put petrol in, drive the car, when the light comes on, put more fuel in!! I couldn't care less what MPG I'm getting, the driving of an E92 M3 makes up for it!! Lol. wink

Seriously though, 20-22 MPG most of the time. Sometimes I hit 24 on a run. But who cares!! wink

Had mine coming up to 2 yrs... Fault free apart from diff oil needing changing to stop the noisy parking speed thrum from the LSD. All in all better than my 911...DCTs do seem to need the software update...

Only other thing is get EDC and don't hate the 18s..I quite like 'em ;-) - all IMHO
