Good Restaurants in York
Discussion
The Missus and I are popping down from Edinburgh for a couple of nights mid week and we would like a recommendation for some good food. We like most food, especially fish. Price is not an issue but value is, if you see what I mean and oh yes, we dont do pretentious.
Thanks in advance,
G

If you want a taxi drive out of town Hazelwood Castle is the best Ive ever been to!!
Hazelwood Castle? Really? The Sous Chef couldn't even cook salmon correctly and made an early exit out of Masterchef The Professionals the other night. Hazelwood hasn't been good since John Benson-Smith left. Several years ago now. I would suggest a stroll along the road that the Blue Bicycle and Loch Fyne are on (Fossgate), there are some other nice places to select from. My personal choice on there would always be Masons Bar & Bistro but Meltons Too is worth a look so I am told by a lot of people that refuse to go anywhere else.
Sometimes there is nice fish on the menu at No.7 on Gillygate, but not every week.
On the outskirts of town on the ring road at Poppleton you will find a branch of Wetherby Whaler fish and chips - depending on what type of fish you meant, that might just hit the spot for one meal!

Well we just got back this afternoon, the Blue Bycycle was excellent, their Kedgeree fishcake was very nice and their turbot was magnificent. We looked at Plunkets but didn't fancy the tex-mex (we do a lot of that at home) atmosphere looked good but... Masons again looked nice but a menu of mainly steaks and burgers was again not what we felt like. Eventually we went to Cafe Concerto near Plunkets and had an excellent meal there. I had the Cuban chicken, while my good lady had the slow cooked lamb shank, both were very tasty.
A nice break with some good albeit cold weather with lots of interesting things to see.
Thanks again for you good advice,
Cheers

J Bakers is good apparently, I love italian and one of my faves is Lucia's just off Stonegate. It's very relaxed and friendly but lovely food.

J Bakers is good, but they have a crap way of making reservations. Either my their website or answerphone. You can't actually speak to anyone which is very fustrating as they didn't confirm my reservation for our last wedding anniversary and got fed up with not being able to talk to anyone. Went somewhere else in the end and they had the cheak to phone and ask where we were.http://www.jbakers.co.uk/
I could accept the cock up, but they guys attitude was appalling. A real shame as the food is very good.
