Gearbox leak

I have an oil leak on the rear of the gearbox and was wondering how easy this would be to do?

Easy enough - remove prop, and old rear seal and push a new one in. Remember that the oil will all come out of the hole where the prop was though!

Hi all,

I thought I'd reinstate this old thread as it it seems relevant rather than start a new one.

I had the car up on a ramp today to top up the gearbox fluid as during an earlier inspection I noticed there was a leak. Having then discovered that accessing the top-up point wasn't very easy I abandoned it for the day to rethink and research the best method.

The leak seems to be coming from the back end of the box (the join between the bell housing and the engine is dry( and it's red a syrupy which makes sense. I noticed a post by 'Spongy' today noticing the same problem on his car saying that he'd heard that it's not uncommon for a leak to come from here. The rear diff casing on my car is also 'wet', seemingly with the same type of fluid. If it is common for the rear gearbox seal to leak, would you expect the leaking fluid to track along the propshaft all the way to the diff?

Also, has anyone ever considered peeling back the drivers side tunnel carpet and cutting a hole (that can later be plugged) to gain better access to the fluid filler point? My exhaust runs very tightly to the side of the gearbox!

Olly,i thought the same as you about the access point,its got to be an option.Havent looked into it properly yet but will come up with a solution when im under the old girl this summer(i mean all summer)Oh a quick point to make is the guy at Dulfords said even with a new seal these can still leak?

They can leak from being overfilled.

Also the seal has a hole in it to vent and I think this is supposed to be at the top (might be wrong on that though).

Filling wise, buy a large oil filling syringe from Draper. Makes filling the box and diff much easier.

Thanks chaps. I'll bear this all in mind when I next have the car on the ramp.

As for accessing the filler plug, I saw another thread where someone mentioned low profile adapter spanner things which Halfrauds sell, but even then I think my exhaust is still too close to the gearbox to access.

i also have a leak from some where, when i was doing my diff bushes i had a good look around whilst the exhaust were off and heat shield to see what i could find. the rear seal looked fine, as thats where i thought it was coming from. The last time it was serviced in novemeber i got the oil level checked and was fine, checked it yesterday but the car was at a bit of an angle and lost some as i had it up on axle stands.

Ratchet spanner adapter to fit a 13mm ratchet spanner from halfords works great they come in a pack of three and is the 1/4 inch one. was going to up load a photo showing mine but photobucket isn't working.

I also find that putting the gearbox oil container in a bowl of hot water for a while before refilling makes it much easier to move as it becomes more viscous.

I also heat my engine oil in the same way when doing an engine oil change.
