Hi..

I follow this forum a bit and also TZ now and again so know some of the options, but I dont really know what to move on/up to. As the title suggest, I have a Monster which I'd like to keep, but would like to get something else but dont seem to know any brands that have any where near the amount of respect Seiko do but offer watches that I like for £3/4/500? There's lots of the usual suspects and some nice Sinns etc but they tend to start around £800+ which I'm not yet willing to spend. I know Seiko do pieces well over this price, but it'd be nice to have something different.

Of course my priority is something I like, but I'd like something that is respectable and that keeps a fair amount of it's value. I dont mind buying used but I like receipts/boxes etc.

I'd like either a 'Diver' or something a bit different/stands out. I'd prefer Automatic but not entirely opposed to Quartz or whatever. Despite not having masses of respect in watch circles, I do like the Dunhill DM7 as it's that bit different.

I see things like Ocean 7, LumTec (generally not 'divers' but I do like the Panerai style), Oris etc with some decent looking pieces around the £400 mark but they just dont seem to have the respect/quality in the general watch community?

..So basically, what after (my) Seiko but before Sinn/Omega/IWC/B&R etc..? What was your next move?

You can go for a more up-market Seiko like the Sumo, or something like the Glycine Combat Sub.

Loads of options - have a good look though the TZ Friday threads for inspiration.

Sinn 556 can be had from Jura for £550 on a leather strap. Definitely a future purchase for me!

There is certainly plenty of choice in that price point, but I would be looking second hand personally. You'll be able to buy much more at that level. smile

I was going to say to Luke, the OP's after a diver, but that was just me not reading his post properly.

Lots of nice Sinn's available for sub £500.00 + these are all options if looking second hand

Damasko DA 37, or the black dialed 36

Fortis Marinmaster

Marathon TSAR

O&W Mirage III

ETA powered PD Chrono

Any number of Precista's including the PRS 14

or the PRS 18

Thanks for the replies guys.

Admittedly, I have been or am aware of those posted but had forgotten completely about Fortis, which in turn is probably my favourite out of those posted. That Damasko is quite nice too, although I'd probably prefer it on a bracelet. The O&W is quite good too, they're one where I need to read up on because I've previously disregarded them as a bit too 'budget' - or that they didnt do anything out of my reach and desirable or a flagship type watch, which I do like the idea of rather than loads of watches around the £400 mark. That probably doesnt make any sense.. Another reason I've been put off them is on the RLT site it seems a lot of their watches are similar to Seikos but just a bit more expensive.

Despite the connections and obvious adoration the Precista/PRS watches get, I cannot stand the 'Precista' script on the dial. To me it looks cheap and tacky. For what it's worth, I'd happily get or atleast try a Dreadnought if they were in my price range so it's nothing against that whole scene. Marathon is a new name to me in the last week or so, I think there might be one in Sales Corner at the minute. However it reminds me of Snickers and I probably need to read up on any history before I form a definite opinion. It is a possible option though..

I do really like PD watches, I dont exactly know why. However, I think unless I got the 'Professionals' one, PO11 or whatever it is, then I'd be forever thinking about them. PDs tend to be a bit more expensive and possibly the next stage after this when the big names come into play.

Seiko Tunas are great, I definitely want one at some point but they're a bit close to my Monster for the moment.. I am very tempted to get 2-3 watches for around a £500 total, but I'm not sure I'd have the time to make it worthwhile.

Again thanks for the replies, it's interesting to see other peoples opinions on watches I may have disregarded in the past.

Anyone else?

Yep I was actually sent a damaged one and decided to test to destruction but gave up at 801metres as I got fed up.

Both Sapphire glass AND caseback have plenty of thickness hence why she passed 801metres!

Those Steinhart divers are generally nice designs, Triton Black probably my favourite. Not the biggest fan of the Steinhart script on the dial but nice either way.

Have neen looking at some Orfinas too:

A little Panerai-esque I know, but I like that style. That one's a manual wind, which I am not sure about at the moment.

Thanks for all the suggestions smile

This isn 't meant to come across as 'negative' but why bother buying watches that satisfy 'the watch community'...get what you like no?

As I've already made quite clear in this thread, I wont just accept what 'the watch community' or indeed the TZ crew generally likes (eg Precista). I am very picky too. However, I do pay attention to their* opinions of the history of a marque, as I dont want to pay over the odds for something with either no history or a simple movement in a fancy case. I dont particularly value brand names and prefer substance. Secondly because I am (and need to be) relatively careful with my money I'd prefer to buy something that is generally 'well liked' as it hopefully means that the watches value doesnt decrease too much/wouldnt be too painful to move on in the future.

Hope you understand smile

You should always buy what you like, but there's nothing wrong with getting a few pointers.

fk off.

I've had enough of snide remarks like this - if you've got the time to write them, you've got the time to read my replies.

Cock.

Apologies then. Too many aren't, and I either fight back or I bugger off. I'm choosing to snap back for a while, hope you understand.
