Well, this is my first foray into the BMW world.... although this might be better posted in the "Classic Cars and Yesterday's Heroes" category!

It's a 1982 635 CSI, 40,000 miles, Taxed and MOT'd till Aug 11, bought at auction yesterday!.... pick it up on Tuesday, lets hope it's not a nail!

Anyone know of a good indi near Kings Lynn?

Great looking car.

There is a very good indy in Newport in Essex called Central Garage, I have been using them for a year or so with my E39. I appreciate it is about 60 miles from KL but it would be well worth the trip, also they are next to the station which may be useful.

Well done Sir!

A relatively unusual colour. Looks very tidy in the photos - what are the wings like?

And you might find you want to ditch the TRX alloys. At £350 a corner, new rubber is eye-wateringly expensive. But then I see from your profile that you've already got an M635, so you'll know all about that.

We ought to have a PH e24 get-together one of these days...

Sadly the M635csi is part of my wish list not one I own!

Like the idea of a meet! Is there much 6er chat on Ph? Any other good sites? Found www.bigcoupe.Com which seems good!

Looks really nice. I could easily fancy running one myself for a while.

If you don't mind me asking, What BCA site was that? and was a specific classic sale, or a normal auction?

Would love to know how much you paid, but if you don't want to say on here thats understandable.

Bigcoupe is excellent, but definitely "international". Largely American in its membership, but there are some Aussies and a good number of Brits on there too. Excellent for technical know-how.

There's a bit of 6er chat on here... and a fair few owners, so no shortage of folks willing to offer a view.

I guess you saw these threads?

So tell us some more about your new purchase - is it as good as it looks in the pics? Any rust? Runs well?

Just to add...

I don't know whether this is your first 6er, but a few points to bear in mind:

1. don't slam the bonnet down - you need to lower it gently and then lock it into place with the lever under the dash

2. the metric tyres will make it "lively" in the rain. They're awful. They're expensive and are best replaced by something more modern. Check the DOT codes on the tyres - the tyres on mine when I bought it were made in 1992 and 1995... well past their useable life. I'm guessing yours could be similarly old.

3. beware of nudging the garage wall with your rear bumper - they are easily knocked out of alignment.

4. make sure you keep the cavity between the inner and outer wings clean. Particularly, crud gathers around the bracket that holds the front bumper and that's where the rot starts.

5. if the front wheels vibrate at 50-60 mph, and assuming the wheels are properly balanced, check steering control arms and bushes.

6. you've bought a design classic - expect some attention!

Wow, great response guys!

From what I can tell the car seems pretty solid and both wings look rust free... but there is always more rust than you think!

the seals on the o/s door and window definitely need replacing.

Interior is in excellent condition but it should be as it's only done 40,000 miles! not bad for a 28 year old!

Can't wait to get her home to check her out at length. Shbhas 10 months tax and mot so I'm hoping she should be good for a bit.

Worst case: I got her for £3650 so don't mind spending a bit if needed!

I'll update later this week (and add a few more photos) once I've picked her up if anyones interested!

Welcome to the world of the uber coupe!

Bigcoupe.com is pretty much the best place to go, http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do is a link to see all the parts numbers (BMW are pretty good at getting almost any part -for a price- out of Munich), by the Bentley manual on the e28 (under the skin, the sixers are basically a five series) http://www.amazon.co.uk/BMW-Service-Manual-1982-19...

I might have a spare passenger door seal.... let me have a look when I'm back home.

Yep! Picked her up yesterday! Obviously this was my first chance to have a proper look over her away from the auction and take her for a spin.

Outside
Happily, on inspecting the outside of the car the bodywork seems as good as I remembered and both front wings, doors and sills look rust free and solid.

3 of the 4 headlights are corroded internally (but are working) so I was straight onto eBay where I have so far found 1 spare so far and will keep looking!... I’m guessing it’s an easy enough fit?

There are one or 2 chips in the paintwork but nothing too drastic. All the chrome is in good condition but some of the black trim metal work around the door window frame will need a little touching up.

Unfortunately all the driver’s side window seals have perished and will need replacing at some stage. Anyone done this themselves?

Tyres are good and have at least 10k on them, although she's still on the original wheels which will mean $$$ when they need to be replaced so I'm considering some new rims (any recommendations??)

Inside
The interior is excellent having only seen 40000 miles although, outside of the artificial lighting in the auction house, the carpets are greener than I thought although still in good condition. No floor mats, so a set have been ordered. Dashboard is in good condition with no cracks.
Both doors are quite stiff (I’m hoping they’ll free up) but more worryingly the driver’s door is clunking as it goes past its 1/3rd stops.

Engine.
This was a bit of a worry at first as although she started first time there were one or 2 concerns as 1) the exhaust is blowing and 2) there is a ticking noise from the driver’s side of the engine. The latter being the more worrying as at first I thought it might be a dreaded camshaft issue.
Following a bit of crawling around and getting my hands dirty, exhaust hole is in the back box and looks repairable fairly easily (although I might try and use this as an excuse to get an aftermarket set up past swmbo. Again, anyone got any recommendations?). Happily, I am 99% sure the ticking is a leaky exhaust manifold gasket which should be easy enough to do.... phew

Test drive was great! She pulls and stops well, and seems straight.
Having just moved house (Tuesday) I’ve got no broadband so no picks to up load yet but I will post again soon (probably once I’ve got the exhaust bits done and given it a whopping service!)

Excellent! Well done. Sounds like you might have got yourself a bit of a bargain!

As regards the engine: they all seem to tick a bit on start up, so I'd take it to a specialist and ask them to listen to it before getting too worried. Might be worth an oil change, with some good quality semi-synthetic, to see whether this improves things.

As for wheel choices... I've bought a set of 17 inch Style 5s off an 8 series for mine. They're reasonably deep-dished, but suit the rather garish red bodywork (IMHO). I'm not sure they'd go so well with the rather more subtle metallic green of yours.

Oh and the other thing to check is the viscous fan. Make sure it works as it should - they're a known weak spot.

My advice is to get it to an indy specialist asap and get them to give it the once over.

I'd be up for that. I have a 1984 Alpina B9 now and since leaving the TVR fraternity am missing PH get togethers.

I'm going to Deutsch Marques Goodwood Breakfast Club on Nov 7th. Anyone here interested?

Benego- there are several threads on big.coupe about wheel sizes that fit... popular styles are the style 5, the style 32 and the style 42. Typical replacement wheel sizes are 16" or 17", with widths 7" or 8" - there's no concerns at the back, but the front you can get rubbing problems.

7" with an et of about 20 should fit without need for spacers etc. style 5s from an e31, e32, e34 or e39 go straight on I think.

I can't make the 7th, unfortunately, but am definitely up for a get-together.

And please can we see some more pics of your B9?

By way of "quid pro quo" (and to help the OP with his wheel choices) here's mine on its new-to-me 17inch Style 5s.
