Clunk Clunk

Recently, my car (MR2 mk3) has been making a noise.

It happens when I brake firmly, then the clunk happens again as soon as I press the accelerator. I can brake, the noise happens, then I lift off and can free-wheel for a few seconds, but it won't make the clunk until I accelerate.

The noise is coming from behind me, so either engine bay, brakes or suspension.

I replaced the brakes and pads all round about a month ago and they were fine, and then about 3 weeks ago I had the clutch changed. The noise has been happening since I had that done, and it's definitely getting worse.

Anyone got any ideas what it could be, before I have to book it into the garage and take time off to get there etc.

If you let off the throttle at high revs, does it do it? Or if you release the clutch? Could be an engine mount if so.

Otherwise, I'd be looking at springs and dampers. Not sure what suspension set up MR2's have though.

Just realised you said you've had the clutch changed. Have they done up the gearbox mounts properly? Also, check the drive shafts for freeplay.

Pretty sure it's not springs and dampers because I've tried bouncing it up and down with my hands and there's no noise what so ever.

A pretty important point I forgot to mention, is that there is a bang/clunk/crash when I go over a major bump in the road.

Loose wheel? I had something similar about a week after getting new tyres fitted, it would clunk each time you braked or accelerated. Guess the wheel was shifting very slightly

Tightened up the bolts (none 'loose', but all not tight enough) and all was fine. Certainly stopped me ignoring that warning you get on the invoice that suggests you check them a few days later!

I once had this on my focus, was only under certain situations when one corner of the car was under load. They lifted the car to look couldnt find anything wrong, it was only when they checked it with weight on the suspension that it becaime clear that the bolt in the arb was working slightly loose and it was only visible under load.

Not a loose wheel, I went round and checked them all.

It will make the noise when I am moving away from a standstill so I can't imagine that would cause them to move much, especially when moving away with the wheels facing forward.

I may be talking bks though.

Does the gear stick also wobble? Could be an engine mount if so? But I'm not a mechanic so I could be super wrong.

Check that all the engine mounts are ok and all the bolts / nuts are done uptight on the engine to gearbox. Also take a spanner to the suspension nuts / bolts.

Did the brake caliper pistons move back smoothly when the pads were changed? It could be a sticky caliper.

Engine mount or exhaust mount bracket?
