Well, have spent many hours pondering weather to TVR or to continue Westfielding. I do believe that TVR is winning. It'll have to be a 4.0 Chim cos I'm just a poor overworked Paramedic, but where's the best place to get one?

Is it worth paying the extra to get one from a dealer, or can one be got privately in relative safety? I'm pretty switched on about what to look out for when buying secondhand cars, but what are the major things to be aware of?
Know anyone who wants a Westfield? (Nearly new, a real bargin!!)

Usual rules apply. Buy privately but check history (TVR specialist OR main dealer but I'd trust a specialist first!). If in doubt, get a TVR specialist to check it out, it'll save you more than it costs in the long run.

Additionally, just 'cos it's old doesn't mean it's knackered. If there's one thing a TVR hates it's not being used and the 4.0 Chimaera is probably the most bullet proof TVR's ever built.

Hope this helps.

Btw. Having had recent experience of Paramedics - you lot are the salt of the earth - good on you mate!

Here's my 2p worth:

There's so many out there at the moment make some guidelines to ease your buying

1) Decide on a budget and stick to it
2) Have a look at loads on the net to get feel of what spec you want – model/colours/mileage/no of owners/distance to travel etc
3) Test drive more than one of the model you want
4) If buying privately get it checked out by dealer/independent – all the details are on here somewhere
5) Don't rush the buying process – no matter how much you want one, your car is out there and you'll know when you've found it.
6) FSH is a must – mixture of dealer/independent is fine
7) Sus out the seller – you can tell so much from him about the car I always think
8) Have a bit of an 'emergency' fund
9) Enjoy it!!

For a bit of peace of mind that you have some recourse and that niggles are going to be attended to the dealer route.....there are some well known good 'uns around the country (Would you buy a used motor from this man??? questions can usually be answered by following a few threads on here.).

The beauty of TVRs is that there are a relatively small number of enthusiasts with the mid 90s cars now, so you're likely to have access to some history.

As mentioned above, one of the greatest pitfalls is a car that hasn't been used. Much better to have one where everything has had to be routinely changed, that has been on a track and out in the rain and snow occasionally!!!

Good Luck!

Also, don't forget specialists: David Gerald, Adrian Blyth. Finally, you may want to check findasportscar.com (co.uk can't remember).
IMO, buying from a dealer is not really worth it when looking at Chimaeras. These cars have been around for a while and there are lots of good independent specialists out there who look after and sell very good cars.

If buying privately, make sure you do your home work, i.e. a couple of hours on PH everyday for a month

Finally, follow the wise words of MikeyT.

Good luck

Yes follow MIKEYT's wise words.

From my experience don't expect to find the 'right' car straight away - I was surprised how long it took - and how much travelling was involved!

The hard thing is to not rush to buy the first car viewed ! Advice - for your first viewing go to a dealer, decide what options/colours you prefer, then widen the net (if you cheque book stayed in the pocket).

Good luck - its great fun - You'll be so proud when you buy.

Thanks for the advice. Will be taking my time over it, is not like I have to put up with a boring rep-mobile till I get to TVR land!!

STIG: Thanks, you'd be suprised how many people don't appreciate us!!

More advice most welcome.

Beware of dealers as well....

Check out PH thread www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=13&t=9119 for some sobering information.

Like they say - get an independent to check it out, otherwise be prepared to live with the consequences of your decision (with hindsight, I was - but that's another story...)
