1 series coupe or e92 coupe?

Hi guys

We got given the new list of company cars today at work with the option of paying an advanced payment to get something better than normal.

the 1 series coupe is avalible in the 120d m sport model, the convertible version is also avalible.

The e92 couple is also avalible but sadly no m sport option! its only avalible in the 2.0i se model

I love the e92 m sport but im unsure on the non m sport model.

what would you choose and why?

Probably the 3-series because its newer having just had a facelift, comes well equipped with leather standard and its the bigger of the two.

You get a harder ride too due to the M Sport suspension, and if you are on the larger side you will find the sports seats dig into your thighs. The SE's handle well enough anyway (and lower list price).

I'd choose the 1 series because you will pay less tax due to lower emissions and lower list price compared to the 3 series.

But that's just me, my company car isn't the only car I have.

My dad has a E92 320i convertible. Non M sport. Nice car, wouldn't be fussed by m-sport stuff unless it actually IS an M sport!

I think im swaying towards the 3 series coupe, looking at the pictures of the m sports and non m sports side by side there isnt much diffrence neway, only thing i would have liked it if the se had larger wheels as standard there is a dealer option for 19" wheels which look real nice but dont think i wast to pay £1k for them

whats the 2.0i engine like 170bhp isnt too shabby although im used to 230bhp in my saab aero. anybody got any real world opinions on the mpg around town too? i average 24mpg in my 9-5 aero what could i expect from the 320i?

2.0I petrol engine is a bag of ste - if you want petrol in needs to be 6 cyl. Otherwise stick with the 20d, better in every way (tax, performance, fuel economy). The 2.0i doesnt even sound nice.

Avoid the M sport (on any model) if your doing any sort of heavy mileage. Fun on he twisties yes, but tiresome on the motorway. The novelty DOES wear off.

im not really worried about performance, just something nice to cruise around in with decent handling for a bit of fun.

I opted for a manual 1 series with m-sport suspension and seats (as part of the dynamic pack) fantastic fun to drive on an open dry road, the novelty of my first RWD powerful(ish) car with sporty suspension, seats and ride. However I do around 40k miles a year on the uk's motorways. I really wish i'd gone for an auto SE now, and have something sporty in the garage for weekends.

Although a weekend blast does always bring a smile to my face

Suppose it depends on the number of miles and access to a 'fun' other car.

Have you tried putting proper tyres on it? Changing the run-flats for normal tyres makes a world of difference to the ride quality and handling.

The ride is hard but then I suppose I don't do as many miles as you.

Although I'm not sure how the ride can be hard on the motorway, my commute is mainly country roads and town driving, the motorway (when I use it) feels the same as it was in my Brothers SE when he had it!!

M Sport isn't at all bad. I've had my 125i M Sport since March and the ride is totally fine. don't even mind the runflats on this one after having a Z4 with them on. Now that is bad!

As someone who also owns a 9-5 Aero, and is currently (or was) looking at replacing it with a BMW 1 or 3 series coupe, given your options I'd defintately go with the 120d M-sport over the petrol 320i.

Seen a couple of the coupes on the road today, amazing how manny you see when your intresting in getting one, i really like the look of them and i htink the 1 series coupe looks very smart but unsure if it looks a little too small, im a big guy 6ft6 and always feel more in proportion with a big car lol

another option would be the 320d m sport saloon, quite a tuff dession considering ill have the car for 3 years i dont want to regret getting the one i choose.

any more thoughts? is the 1 series coupe considerd a hair dressers car?

Depends on spec.

116i in white with poverty spec, driven by someone with an orange face is very different to a black 135i Msport driven by someone.... with good taste in engines.

At 6'6" I would personally be looking at the 3 series. the 1 series would be big enough, but forget taking anyone in the back, making it pretty much a 3 seater.

Although i actually think as this is a company vehicle, you should be choosing first between petrol and diseasl.

So you can get a 320d saloon, but not a coupe?

first off, the 2.0i engine isnt a patch on the 2.0d - just a no brainer on that front, esp. as a co. car.

I have a 320d M Sport saloon (and have owned a 335d Coupe (NOT mapped!).

I can honestly say the 320d is one of the best all round cars I have owned (and I have owned a few - see my profile).

In 32,000 miles (since March 2009) it hasnt missed a beat, is averaging 49mpg, and yet never feels lacking on power.

I did 1,500 miles in 36 hours (Guildford to John O'Groats and back), averaging 45mpg (depsite seen 145 leptons on the way back and having 3 up and two bikes on the roof on the way up), and averaging nearly 70mph!
