NZ - Clashing with Rugby World Cup 2011
Discussion
I'm planning a trip to New Zealand next October with my g/f. We've settled on the week commencing 17th onwards for a total of 3 weeks, so flying out the preceding Friday night and then aiming to get back on the Sunday of the last week. We plan to fly to Auckland but then get an internal flight and spend most of our time on the South Island; maybe hire a camper, or a car and holiday home.
The only issue is I've just discovered that these dates overlap the last week of the Rugby World Cup, which from my research effectively ends on 23/10/11.
Does anyone know if we would be better shifting our trip one week forward, i.e. flying out over the weekend of the 22/23rd of October whilst the last match is going on? My main concern is flight prices and availability and also availability of hire cars, campers etc. Even though most of the World Cup matches take place in the North island, I suspect there will be plenty of people who are combining it with a holiday in the South.

Seconded.I was fortunate to see many of the matches in RWC 2007. SIMPLY AMAZING atmosphere - even in the land of the constantly waving White Flag.
I'd kill to go to NZ next year for the same.
Land of the constantly waving flag? What does that mean?
Let’s be clear. I don’t like rugby, I don’t like sport and I don’t like crowds. Think of a young Victor Meldrew and you're along the right lines. I am going for the scenery the wide open spaces. To give you a clearer picture, the highlight of my secondary school P.E. Rugby lessons was a misguided tackle to one of the school ‘heavies’ which I rather foolishly performed head on. The fact I was unable to walk upright for a week assured me that my future interests did not rest in athletics.
As it happens, I’ve moved my plans forward a week, but thanks anyway!

Having just returned from touring both North and South Islands for three weeks with 2 school 1st XV teams, my advice to you would to be to keep your lack of enjoyment about all things sporty and especially rugby to your self. The Kiwi's are rightfully very proud and protective of their national sport. It does seem a shame to be in NZ whilst the world cup is on and not take advantage of what will a pretty special time for the country as a whole(regardless of personal preferences)
It might be worth considering moving your dates to avoid the IRB world cup completely as most major touristy areas will be swarming with supporters, especially as OZ is reasonably close, compared to when the cup is hosted in the northern hemisphere.
Hope you enjoy NZ as much as we did, one of our lads summed up the whole country in what we feel is a perfect statement.
"They say god created the world in 6 days, he must have spent 4 days in New Zealand"
Not bad for a 6ft 4" forward !!
