Track and Autotest Car 106 or 205?

Im looking to get a cheap (circa £250/300) hatch to do some trackdays and autotesting in.

Car will be towed to events so will no need/have tax, mot or insurence.

Clearly the 106 is the newer car, but i understand the 205 is or can be made lighter.

There where good numbers of both built (dont have figures to compair) but i dont know what the situation with 205s is now?

Else also thinking about the nova, and have been overed a g-reg civic for £300

I imagine that a 205 for that kind of money will need a lot of work. The same may well go for a 106, but the advantage of the 106 is that there are plenty around so you should stand a better chance of picking up a goodun.

another car worth considering is a corsa, cheaper to buy and an even greater quantity of cheap parts available

205 more precise and edgy-for trackdriving; 106 more indirect but still very adjustable - for rally

To the OP, are you looking for GTi models or smaller engined stuff? Also what, if any, modifications are you planning to make to it and do you have a budget for that?

You may be able to find a ready modified car for a little more than your initial budget.

As I understand it the 205 (gti atleast) uses the heavier iron block engine. 106 uses the lighter TU aluminium block engine.

The car is going to be a shared ownership car, with many of the owners already having second cars, the the plan largly is just to keep costs really low.
- Clearly if it breaks it will be fixed, and if required, using uprated parts.
- But largely the plan is to pick it up for the £300 odd and then just use it as is.
- The aim is to have cheap fun, not to set laptimes, so while a Gti spec would be nice its not considered important.

Weight is also an issue for towing, which certainly rules out a E30!
