Rescued (from the cat) what looked like a new-from-the-nest wood pigeon yesterday. Bit late in the year?

Pigeons can breed all year round. 3/4 broods quite common.
Hence the original dove-cots when they were used as all year fresh food.

I saw a young one this week.

May just have been one which had just moulted some feathers, that happens now too.

Young ones don't have the white collar around the neck.
