Registering as a disabled person
Discussion
Did not know this could be so difficult. I don't know how all these people scam the system getting this benefit and that benefit, cars the works. I can't get hold of anybody to help me in any way ! They all just make noises on the end of the phone.
basically have a bad back problem thats kept me off work for 2 out of the last 4 years. Possibility of another operation on spine looming and they have made hints of trying to get rid of me. Almost on zero wages after been on half wages for a few months. I've had this problem for four years now and have been in pretty much constant pain - if I'm not in agony im out of it on painkillers.
Basically my union rep told me I'm covered under the Disability Discrimination Act. I'd been thinking for the last year or so that I could do with a blue badge for parking at shops etc - since at times I can barely walk and actually struggle to drive. So now after four sodding years of pain, drugs and grief from work I have accepted that - for now - I have a disability. Now, I don't want any money from anywhere I juust want to get back to my work full time ( currently back 4 hours a day on a phased return - awaiting the results of yet another MRI after an operation in April) and get on with my life. If i could get a blue badge - great, thats all I think i would need - it would be of great benefit to me.
So union rep told me its an individuals choice to be registered as a disabled person - I spoke to my GP about everything I've said here. He said yup call local social services - they will send stuff here.
Call them and they say no we dont deal with that - go to the job centre or go back to your GP.
Is there a disabled persons register? Anybody know how to become registered as a person with a disability? Nobody I've spoken to on the phone has a bloody clue. Would like to be on it as I think I may get more protection from being shoved out of a side door at work.
Any advice appreciated - I am thinking of talking to CAB.

Hello Barry, long time no speak.
Sorry, of no use of course, but I can't believe you're STILL suffering that badly. As always fingers are crossed for ya mate.

Been a while eh ! Hope you are well. Had a 2nd op - still not worked. Needed another MRI - awaiting results. With the impending cuts in the public sector we will be shedding some jobs too - a fair whack. From the way some things have been worded by HR and my manager they are trying to usher me quietly out a side door. Won't work - the only way they can get rid of me is redundancy or medical retirement. I'll just need to wait and see - trying like f
k to work as many hours as I can. Colleagues can see I'm still in agony - came back in on a phased return to try avoid zero wages. Union cant tell me to register disabled - but I've been thinking bout it for a while - suppose its a pride thing. I don't want money from anywhere - just properly recognised for having a disability, hopefully only temporary. Been so long since I remember being "normal".Hope you are well mate - I don't say much on here nowadays - usually fcked on the drugs so I try not say anything !
All the best Nick.

I think MonAmiMate (he of the man vs cyclist thread anyway), might be "registered disabled" and able to offer advise?
I'm sure there are plenty of others on here also able to assist....I just don't know who...
Cheers - maybe someone will come on later. Once g/f gets home from work I'm sure she'll figure it out.I'm sure there are plenty of others on here also able to assist....I just don't know who...

First off, as far as I'm aware there is no such thing as the "Disabled Person's Register", which is what you seem to be looking for.
If you want a blue badge it should be relatively simple - my local authority do them here - I googled blue badge and Aberdeenshire and got directed to the website. OK, having got there I then had to write asking for a form - doh!! - but you just go with the flow. Assessment is done primarily on what the GP says on his report.
You may qualify for disabilty living allowance, depending on how able you are to look after yourself - and hand in hand with this is the mobilty allowance, which comes at 3 levels.
The Disability discrimination Act is legislation that should mean you are not demoted or discriminated over due to your disabilty, and deals with things like reasonable adjustments if going back to work but needing help. In my experience however - I have clinical depression and cancer which affect my working abilities, and are covered under the auspices of the DDA, and I've just been signed on as fit to work after cancer treatment but with a reasonable adjustment of working from home (I'm a programmer so it should be easy to do so...)- it means nowt to employers and even big ones like the insurance lady with the black cloak, as I'm going thru hoops and loops to get them to give me any work (or pay me!!)
Good luck!!

Thanks very much for your post - not sure how I got it into my head there was a disabled persons register. I have the form for a blue badge - I just hope people reading this realise I'm not after anything and have put off applying for these things. If you want a blue badge it should be relatively simple - my local authority do them here - I googled blue badge and Aberdeenshire and got directed to the website. Thanks very much for your post - you sound like you have been and are going through a s
tload more than me. I hope everything goes well for you.All the best.
You used to be able to 'register as disabled' via the Jobcentre until iirc the early/mid nineties.
I believe Jobcentres still have Disability Employment Advisers, who can help you with remaining in work as well as those looking for work. They will be a good point for finding out what's available to help. Google Access To Work which was, hopefully still is, a scheme to help employers pay for adaptions with the aim of keeping people working if at all possible - a decent chair may help you, for example, a ramp and wider doors for wheelers, that sort of thing. It was always under spent.
But if you're not able to be in work for the time being, you've paid an insurance for some help, National Insurance. That's what it is, an insurance, so don't let the tabloid wailing minority put you off. You'd rather be fit, but meanwhile, you paid for it.
You might consider claiming Disability Living Allowance (not means tested) which, if you were entitled, would almost certainly ensure your Blue Badge, though it's not he only route. Btw they can be issued temporarily now too, didn't used to be. DLA is intended to help with the extra transport costs due to disabilty/health issues. For eg, you may get a cab when you need to, which is better than being laid up and not able to work because you overdid it.
You may find the Spinal Injury Association a useful source of info too.
Good luck with it all. Guess you've tried amitriptyline but if not, it's worth a go.

Thanks for that. I will nip in to a jobcentre this week and see what they say about it all. I just had it in my head you were registered disabled. Thanks for taking the time to post - amytrip is one of the very many drugs im on/have used over the years. Right now im using virtually everything - pregabalin, dihydros, tramadol - you name it. Thanks again for your advice.
In the modern world, to put someone on a 'disabled register' would probably be far too un-p.c. for many folk.
I'd contact your local Department for Work and Pensions office and ask for a DLA application pack. The DLA form is a long one, and if you fill it out 'right' I guarantee that you'll feel like sh!t by the end of it, but you may well be entitled to an amount of care component benefit or mobility benefit.
Your local Council will probably deal with 'blue badges'. Where I live it's part of the role of the switch-board staff who take referrals for Adult Social Services (the staff are effectively telephonists, not Social Workers). Blue badges are most often available to those who have problems walking any sort of distance. They are issued to the 'person' rather than to a specific vehicle.

Thanks all for your replies.
Today I contacted http://www.capability-scotland.org.uk/home.aspx
Spoke with a really nice/helpful person. Basically there is no register as such in Scotland. There was a voluntary one in England she thought but none up here. I don't want or need finacial benefits, just recognised for work purposes as having a,hopefully, temporary disability. So I won't be applying for DLA - so I won't be kept on record anywhere as having a disability. My managers, HR etc may challenge what i say, but I have visited their docs over the years and have medical evidence behind me. I'm not taking the piss, but believe that from time to time a blue badge would be a huge help to me - so I will apply for a temporary one and if I get it will use as required.
I will also make an appointment with the Jobcentre - mentioned here about disability advisers - the person I spoke with earlier also mentioned this, so I will have a word with them.
Again thanks to all who posted advice.
Cheers
Barry.

Isn't it just about applying for and eggting Disbility Living Allowance? The descri[ption unde rthe DDA is simply that you have a disability last more than 12 months which affects your ability to do the normal trhings inn life as I recall.
Yeah - I just dont want or need DLA - therefore I wont even apply. i will however apply for a blue badge as this may come in usefull when/if more surgery is required.Gassing Station | Health Matters | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
