Going in 3 weeks for 10 days, I went when I was a child with my parents but stayed mostly in the hotel in Ocho Rios, just went to Dunn's River Falls and not many other places I can remember.
What are the suggested sites to visit? I intend on hiring a car and exploring (but getting back to the hotel in daylight) we are staying in Montego Bay.
Cheers

it's been a few years since i went, but doubt the place has changed that much tbh...
i stayed in negril, which is realtively underdeveloped compared to mo' bay and the north coast. it's the old hippy area with 7miles of beaches. many have reggae nights at a weekend which are well worth a visit - i say toots and the maytals play a small set on the beach 5mths before i say them play the jazz stage at glasto!
a car can be hired cheaply but it might be worth clubbing together with some others to hire a minibus & driver for the day. any taxi driver will offer you his services. i think it cost us $15 each [7 people] and he took us on a tour of the south area of the island - the waterfalls, bunny wailer's [of bob marley and the wailers] house/museum, the appleton rum factory, a local market, and a scenic route through the mountains. well worth the cash.
i would only visit kingston for the bob marley house or to go on to port royal. couple of hours tops. not a pretty place and not somewhere you feel safe. i questioned the taxi driver why some of the sideroads were barricaded. he told me it was to deter drive by shootings. we took a hotel in kingston overnight to avoid late travel, didn't go anywhere near downtown after dark.
the blue mountains are stunning, they can be combined with a visit to kingston to make it worth the effort.
but really, get yourself away from the tourist areas and into the hills. the scenery is fantastic and the people are incredibly welcoming and friendly. just potter about and take it as it comes.
one bit of advice, if anyone selling you anything asks you if you've been to jamaica before, say yes. the price will be lower!

Yes, to the mountains and everything above etc.
Also, stay out for at least one sunset at Ricks Cafe in Negril. Music, food, cliff diving and a great ocean sunset.
There is also a swim with dolphins / sharks place at Ocho Rios now.
You'll have a good time whatever you choose to do.
Irie !

not in mo' bay, no. never ate there.
in negril there is a strip of boutique hotels and restaurants on the clifftop as you head from the beach towards ricks.
ricks is waaaay overrated, a true tourist trap if ever there was one. much better to have a nice meal on the boardwalk of one of these places and watch the sun go down in style.
when i went the shack-type were all worth a visit. completely unpretentious - a shed to serve as the kitchen and patio tables on the lawn - but the food could be quite excellent. in one [iirc the three canoes in negril] you could get 3 whole lobsters [fresh caught that day] and sides, beers etc. for about $20. barry-argain.

Perfect, went for similar places when we went to Barbados a couple of years ago. We will be eating out at the shacks / beach bars every day. I don't like staying round hotels in the day and so I've only booked breakfast. Nice to do one really good restaurant at a plush hotel / restaurant though (even if food from the shacks is better).in negril there is a strip of boutique hotels and restaurants on the clifftop as you head from the beach towards ricks.
