Buying a car - tax, insurance & registration technicalities
Discussion
Sorry in advance for this immensely tedious question, but I'd be very grateful for the answer!
I'm in the process of buying a car whose tax is due to expire at the end of this month. However, as part of the deal the car is currently in the workshop having some attention to the chassis - hence I probably won't be in a position to actually drive it away until early next month.
"No problem!" I hear you say. "Simply get the current owner to re-tax it for you." Trouble is, the owner's insurance has now expired as well, and naturally he won't want to re-insure it now.
As far as I can see, this is what I'm going to have to do:
Does it matter that I'd be trying to tax the car before the transfer of registration details is complete?
Does it matter that the insurance certificate and the V5 would be in different names?
Told you it was a dull question!

As far as I can see, this is what I'm going to have to do:
- Buy my own insurance a week or two early and insist they send me the certificate ASAP,
- Tear off the relevant bits of the V5 and send them off when we finalise the purchase,
- Use the remaining portion of the V5 together with my new insurance certificate to buy a tax disc at the post office,
- er...
- that's it?
Does it matter that I'd be trying to tax the car before the transfer of registration details is complete?
