I'm in the middle of doing a general look at household costs and have concluded I’m paying too much for my current Sky telly package (£44 a month). Looking at the Sky website and dropping some of the channels that I simply don't use I could, as a new customer, get what I want for £20 a month.

It's difficult to find any info on the Sky website for existing customers to change their packages, does anyone have experience of sorting this out? I'm a long time out of my original 12 month contract, has anyone managed to cancel Sky and start again as a new customer or is this simply more hassle than its worth?

I cancelled Sky+ after the one year contract and within a couple of months they rang me and offered me 6 months at half rate and I accepted.

A couple of days later someone else rang me and offered me a year at 50% off but then retracted the offer when they realised that I had just got a new deal. D'oh!

You could try cancelling and maybe they will offer you a deal there and then. Of course they may call your bluff and you will end up with a box that still picks up the Sky FreeSat channels and doesn't record, whilst you hope that they call you back.

Being unemployed I decided that Sky needed a prune and just phoned up the normal call number and then struggled with a Asian sounding bloke (with an English name surprisingly) who didn't seem to understand the concept of a downgrade (not in his script) who eventually put me through to a northern bloke who sorted out the downgrade.

You now have to give a months notice for any downgrade.

Strangely you can upgrade on the website but not downgrade!

So what you need to do is:-
1 - Make yourself a tea/coffee
2 - Make yourself comfy
3 - Call Sky and expect a long call!

Good luck
