Got a quote today from BMW to convert my 2000 reg M5 tape deck and monitor to the larger screen you can get from the 2002 model, £3.5k! Anyone bought one off the net and managed to fit it cheaper?

I've seen a few upgrades including DVD drive and wide screen at around £1200, have a look at the M5board and surprisingly at Ebay. I believe a user 'bmwdiagnostics' had a few in stock.

hi there,

Good idea to check M5board as it's all covered there.

However Ebay will be your best bet for getting hold of a widescreen monitor. They'll typically vary in buy it now pricing from around £180 up to around £300 or so.

I'll assume you have GPS, so you probably have the Mk2 version. The one everyone wants is the Mk4 version which is DVD based for the maps. These sell on ebay typically for around the £400 mark.

more research on the M5 board will also cover any other bits you may or may not need to do or change or get a hold of.

So around the £600 as a minimum amount of spend here, remember though it'll be for 2nd hand units and potentially up to around 7/8 years old. It could fail next week or month, although they generally seem to be reliable, theres more reports of other elements of the systems failing etc.

If you have the TV function in your M5, and it's most likely the analogue version, be aware that it'll cease to work once the digital switchover completes throughout the UK. BMW's own OEM hybrid Digital DVB-T / Analogue tuner unit which occasionally pop up on Germany ebay will cost around £500-600 again 2nd hand.

Cheers, Dennis!

Thanks guys, I know the units and am currently the highest bidder on ebay for one of the items but it's the fitting that was my main query. BMW told me that there are 15 parts to buy to get this thing fitted. I just thought that the old one would slide out and the new one in!

Anyone actually switched the old TV / tape deck for the newer widescreen?

There are definitly people on M5board who have done the swap, so you should find some good info there. I could be wrong about this but I don't think the 16:9 monitor is 'plug and play'. I seem to recall reading that the plugs on the back are different.

Seems a lot of money for little gain. I would rather spend the money on an exhaust or suspension upgrade.

On the back of this...

Is there any scope for a GPS MKIV upgrade on a pre-facelift car without sat nav?

Hi Great Pretender,

Yes, you can retrofit all the required units and the looms etc to get everything installed and working. If you manage to locate all the pieces at almost the cheapest buy it now's on Ebay, you'd be looking at £1000 ish. £1200-1300 being the usual figure. Then you'd need to pay someone to install it all, so probably looking at around the £1300-1500 mark. Of course, that'd be with the analogue TV tuner, which will soon be useless. If you add on the cost of the hybrid OEM BMW unit which typically are £500-600 as previously mentioned, then I'd say your retrofit would be around the £2000 mark.

Way way too much for 7-10 year old, 2nd hand equipment with no warranty/guarantee. Spookily, people still seem willing to pay the very high amounts for the individual components etc..

Cheers, Dennis!

Thanks Dennis, that's most useful.

I guess you're right; £2000 for potentially dodgy kit is rather silly. I'll just leave it and stick with my TomTom App for the iPhone.

I do however want a CD player as the car (somewhat curiously) was ordered without one. Is it easy to retrofit the CD changer into the boot? I'm assuming ebay would be the best bet for this also.

Hi Great Pretender,

I'm working on some E39 concepts and solutions for my forthcoming business venture - however I focus on the aftermarket rather than the outdated and over priced old OEM units mentioned above.

You are welcome to message me for more info !

In direct relation to your question, depending on which setup your M5 has, radio cassette or the MID panel, I think it's relatively straightforward to add a CD changer to update you to mid 90's technology wink

Cheers, Dennis!
